Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- After dropping the first two sets to South Dakota, Bradley Volleyball battled back to force a fourth set with a 27-25 win in the third and fought off a pair of match points in the fourth before the Coyotes were able to close out a 25-19, 25-20, 25-27, 25-23 victory over the Braves Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

Sophomore Rachel Pranger tied a career-best with 19 kills to help lead Bradley (3-7 overall), while fellow sophomore Hannah Thompson tallied her eighth consecutive double-double with 14 kills and 26 digs to go with four aces.  Senior Hannah Angeli added a double-double of her own, finishing with 31 assists and 11 digs.  Freshman Raeann Bergman hit at a .562 clip while collecting 10 kills to help spark the Bradley offensive efforts.

South Dakota (11-1 overall), which reached last year's NCAA Tournament, was led by 21 kills from Elizabeth Loschen, who was one of three Coyotes with 16 or more kills.

Loschen had 14 of her 21 kills in the first two sets, helping power South Dakota to 25-19 and 25-20 wins as Bradley found itself in an 0-2 hole to start the contest.  The Coyotes hit .343 as a team in the opener.

Pranger and Thompson carried the load for Bradley in the second with the duo combining for 12 of the team's 16 kills.  Pranger had seven kills in the second set, while Thompson notched five kills and an impressive 14 digs in the second-set loss.

Bradley had to battle from behind throughout the third set.  South Dakota jumped out to a 7-2 lead and the Braves trailed by seven points, only to rally for the victory.  The Coyotes led 16-9 when Bradley would begin chipping away at the deficit.  Pranger had three kills during a 4-1 BU spurt which cut the South Dakota lead to 17-13.

South Dakota's lead was still five at 22-17 when Bradley would make another push.  Bergman started a 7-1 BU run with a kill and later added a block.  Back-to-back Thompson aces pulled Bradley within a point at 23-22 and Bergman would eventually give the Braves a 24-23 advantage on her fifth kill of the set.

The Coyotes got the next point to pull even at 24-24 and the teams traded the next two points, before Pranger broke a 25-25 tie with her eighth kill of the fourth set to put Bradley ahead 26-25.  A South Dakota error on the next serve gave the Braves the set 27-25.

In the fourth, Bradley used an 8-1 run, which included three kills, a block and an ace from Thompson to build a 13-8 edge.  South Dakota fought back, however, and would tie things up at 15-15.  The Coyotes had consecutive kills to snap a 17-17 tie and eventually held match at 24-21.

Pranger's 19 kill of the match cut the deficit to two at 24-22 and a South Dakota error pulled the Braves within one at 24-23.  Elizabeth Juhnke sealed a 25-23 set win for South Dakota with a kill, however, as the Coyotes pushed their win streak to eight consecutive matches with the victory.

Earlier in the day at the CEFCU Classic, South Dakota swept Northern Illinois 25-14, 25-20, 25-19.

Bradley closes out the CEFCU Classic Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest against Northern Illinois.  The match is Bradley's annual Cram the Coliseum event, which is part of the university's Family Weekend.
