Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley's freshmen middles Raeann Bergman and Karagan Coggin combined for 16 kills without an error on just 27 attacks (.593), while sophomore Hannah Thompson added her 11th consecutive double-double to help power the Braves to a 27-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Missouri State Saturday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum.

Bergman had 10 kills on 18 swings to go with her four blocks and Coggin added six kills on just nine attacks as the duo tallied eight of their 16 combined kills in the final two sets.  Bradley (5-8 overall, 1-1 MVC) had just one attack error between the third and fourth sets, hitting a combined .455 in the two frames.

Thompson finished with a team-high 14 kills and 11 digs to post her 11th consecutive double-double for the longest streak by a Brave since Samantha Hardwick had 12 straight in 2000.  In addition, sophomore Kat Poore matched Bergman's effort with 10 kills on 18 attacks without an error after collecting a career-high 17 kills in Friday's MVC opener against Southern Illinois.

Bradley jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, but Missouri State (3-13 overall, 0-2 MVC) clawed back into the contest and eventually held set point at 24-23 on an Amelia Flynn kill.  Bergman answered with her fourth kill of the set to knot the score at 24-24, only to have Flynn tally another kill to put the Bears back in front 25-24.  The Braves fought off another set point, pulling even at 25-25 on a Missouri State service error.  Back-to-back kills by Thompson, who had five first-set kills, capped a 27-25 BU victory.

In the second set, Missouri State broke things open with a 4-0 run to push what was a 13-10 advantage to 17-10.  Bradley managed to pull within two points at 22-20 with Bergman following a Thompson kill with a solo block.  The Bears would score the final three points of the set, however, and even the match with a 25-20 win.

The Braves did not have a hitting error in the fourth set, boasting a .464 attack percentage in the frame and cruised to a 25-15 win to take control of the match.  A 7-0 run sparked by back-to-back Bergman blocks broke the contest open.  Sophomore Rachel Pranger added one of her career-high four aces during the spurt, which included a kill by Sara Maddox, as Bradley built a 14-5 advantage.  Bergman recorded four of her 10 kills on the day in the fourth as the Braves took the set 25-15.

The offensive prowess carried over to the fourth set, with Bradley notching kills on each of its first five swings of the frame and jumping out to a 6-1 lead.  After a Flynn kill stopped the opening salvo by the Braves, Bradley answered with five consecutive points to push the advantage to eight (11-3) and the lead would balloon to as many as 13 points at 23-10.  Bergman put the finishing touches on a 25-14 fourth-set win to seal the match with her only kill of the fourth.  The Braves, who hit .281 in the match, boasted a .444 attack percentage in the fourth-set win.

Sophomore Hailey Delacher had a career-high 30 assists in the victory to help highlight the contest for the Braves.  The victory was Bradley's third straight win in the series with Missouri State to mark the first time the Braves have claimed three consecutive matches from the Bears.

Bradley plays its third match in four days Monday, when the Braves head to Terre Haute, Ind., for a 5 p.m. (CST) match at Indiana State.
