Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Oakland collected 17 blocks, but Bradley answered with a season-best 10 aces and managed to grind out a 26-24, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18 victory over the Golden Grizzlies Friday night at Renaissance Coliseum to conclude day one of the 2019 CEFCU Invitational.

Bradley (2-3 overall) hit just .113 in the match, marking the team's lowest hitting percentage in a victory since hitting .113 in a win at Wichita State on Sept. 22, 2000.  Solid serving (10 aces) along with a good defensive effort helped the Braves pull out the victory as Bradley extended its non-conference home win streak to 12 consecutive matches.

Sophomore Hannah Thompson led the way offensively with 13 kills and added 11 digs for her third consecutive double-double.  Senior Hannah Angeli had a double-double of her own, finishing the night with 23 assists and a team-best 16 digs.  Angeli was one of three Braves to serve up three aces, with sophomore Rachel Pranger and senior Maggie Revell each adding three aces.

The first set featured 12 ties and four lead changes, with Bradley needing a late push to win the opener 26-24.  Oakland led 21-19 only to have the Braves pull even at 21-21 on an Angeli ace and later knotting things up at 22-22.  The Golden Grizzlies eventually had set point at 24-22, only to have the Braves battle back.  Junior Sara Maddox, who had five kills on nine swings in the opener, made it a one-point deficit with a kill and the score was tied 24-24 after an Oakland error.  Thompson followed an Oakland timeout with a kill to give BU a 25-24 edge and Maddox capped a 26-24 comeback win for the Braves with a kill.

Oakland (3-2 overall) scored the first four points of the second set and jumped out to a 6-1 lead.  The Golden Grizzlies hit .467 in the frame and took the set 25-17 to even up the match.

Bradley managed to lead nearly wire-to-wire in the third set despite hitting just .026 (11 kills - 10 errors - 38 attacks) in the stanza.  Revell served up back-to-back aces during a 4-0 Bradley spurt which broke a 7-7 tie and the Braves would extend the advantage to as many as six at 19-13 on a Pranger kill.  Oakland eventually pulled within four points at 21-17, before freshman Karagan Coggin found the floor with a kill to push the lead back to five.  The Braves went on to claim the third set 25-21.

The Braves entered the fourth set hitting a combined .080 on the night, but managed to put together their best offensive frame of the evening.  Six Bradley players notched at least two kills in the fourth, led by Thompson's five fourth-set kills as she helped the Braves hit .216 as a squad in what proved to be the final set.

Revell helped the Braves take an early 8-3 lead with a pair of blocks and a kill.  Oakland would hang around and later pull within two at 13-11.  A Pranger kill and consecutive Oakland errors quickly pushed the lead back to five (16-11) as the Braves would cruise to a 25-18 fourth-set win to close out the match.

This afternoon at the 2019 CEFCU Invitational, DePaul earned a four-set victory over Belmont.  Bradley went 2-0 during Friday's action at the CEFCU Invitational with DePaul and Oakland both splitting a pair of matches, while Belmont dropped both of its contests.

Saturday's action at the 2019 CEFCU Invitational gets underway at 10:30 a.m. with Belmont facing Oakland.  Bradley and DePaul wrap up the tournament with a 2 p.m. match at Renaissance Coliseum.
