Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore Hannah Thompson turned in her fourth straight double-double with team highs of 10 kills and 19 digs, while senior Maggie Revell added seven kills and hit at a .400 clip, but DePaul used a balanced offensive attack to top Bradley 25-23, 25-12, 20-25, 25-21 in the final match of the 2019 CEFCU Invitational.

Despite the setback Bradley (2-4 overall) claimed the tournament title via a tie-breaker with the Braves, DePaul and Oakland each posting a 2-1 tournament mark.  Bradley owned a 7-4 record in sets played for the tournament compared to 7-5 for DePaul and 7-6 for Oakland.

Thompson and Revell both earned spots on the CEFCU Invitational All-Tournament team, with DePaul's Donna Brown and Isabelle Banez along with Oakland's Megan Hobler joining the Bradley pair on the all-tournament team.  Thompson averaged team-bests of 3.64 kills and 3.73 digs per set in the three matches, while Revell hit .381 for the weekend and collected 2.00 kills per set.

In the opening set, Bradley had to rally from behind.  DePaul (5-1 overall) led by as many as four points in the first set only to have the Braves eventually pull even at 18-18 on a block by Karagan Coggin and Rachel Pranger.  Senior Hannah Angeli, who had four aces on the day, capped a 6-1 Bradley spurt with an ace after a DePaul timeout to give Bradley a 19-18 advantage.  DePaul answered with three consecutive points, however, to go back in front 21-19 and the Blue Demons would later hold a 23-21 edge.

Thompson chased a DePaul error with a block to once again pull Bradley even at 23-23.  DePaul's Emma Price broke the tie with a kill and a Bradley error gave the Blue Demons a 25-23 victory in the first.

DePaul raced out to a 9-1 lead in the second set and hit .414 in the frame to cruise to a 25-12 win as the Braves quickly found themselves in an 0-2 hole.

Thompson tallied five of her 10 kills on the afternoon in the third set and helped Bradley to a 25-20 victory to force a fourth set.  The BU lead was 8-7 after back-to-back DePaul points, before the Braves would take control with a 9-1 run.  Angeli followed a DePaul error with an ace and the combo of Raeann Bergman and Sara Maddox combined for a block.  A Kat Poore kill capped a 4-0 spurt which put the Braves ahead 12-7.

Poore followed a DePaul point with another kill and consecutive Blue Demon errors made it a 15-8 Bradley advantage.  Thompson put the finishing touches on the 9-1 run with back-to-back kills of her own as the Braves built a 17-8 lead.  DePaul managed to claw back into the contest, tying things up at 20-20.  Revell snapped the tie with a kill and added a pair of aces during a 5-0 Bradley run which closed out a 25-20 victory for the Braves.

Bradley raced out to a 6-0 lead in the fourth set, but DePaul slowly chipped away at the advantage to pull even in the set at 12-12.  The Braves held a 12-10 lead on a Bergman kill, only to have the Blue Demons go on an 8-1 run as DePaul built an 18-13 advantage.  The lead ballooned at six (20-14) before Bradley made a late push.  The Braves would rally to pull within two points at 21-19 on a Thompson ace.  DePaul stopped the 5-1 spurt with back-to-back errors and later held match point at 24-20 after a Price kill.  DePaul went on to take the fourth set 25-21, sealing the match on Price's 14th kill of the day.

Thompson was the only Bradley player to reach double figures in kills, finishing with 10 on the day as she notched her fourth double-double of the year.  After serving up a season-best 10 aces in Friday night's victory against Oakland, Bradley had nine aces against DePaul.  Angeli, who has a team-best eight aces on the season, had four of Bradley's nine aces Saturday.

Three DePaul players had 11 or more kills, paced by Brittany Maxwell's match-high 14 kills, while Banez led the DePaul defensive efforts with a match-high 30 digs.  Five Blue Demons had seven or more kills in the contest.

Bradley returns to action next weekend, traveling to Chicago for the UIC Invitational.  The Braves face tournament-host Illinois-Chicago Friday at 7 p.m. in addition to playing Saturday contests against Sacramento State (10 a.m.) and Murray State (4 p.m.).
