Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Cedar Falls, Iowa – A tight Missouri Valley Conference contest fell to the hosts on Saturday night as Northern Iowa prevailed over the Bradley men's basketball team, 69-64. The Braves are now 10-5 on the season and 1-1 in Valley action, while the Panthers improve to 12-2 and 1-1 versus league foes.

Senior Nate Kennell led the Braves with 18 points, while matching his career high with nine boards. Senior Darrell Brown and junior Elijah Childs also scored in double figures as Brown tallied 12 points and Childs added 11 in his first game back after missing the previous three contests with an injury.

Both teams posted a run in the opening 20 minutes of action, setting up a tight second half throughout. Bradley raced out to the early advantage in the contest, earning a 23-11 lead halfway through the period. Kennell led BU with eight points during the early surge, while the Braves made nine of their first 16 field goals.

Northern Iowa, however, fought back and used two different 7-0 runs to gain its first lead of the game, 29-28. The Panthers then headed into the locker room with a two-point edge, 34-32, thanks to a late 3-pointer in the period.

The second half was close throughout as neither team gained more than a one-possession lead until 10:18 remaining. The Panthers then took advantage from the charity stripe to lead by as many as six points with just over a minute remaining in the game. Kennell answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the game to cut the deficit in half, 65-62, before Brown scored a layup with 23 seconds remaining for a one-point contest. The Panthers again sunk a pair of free throws to reclaim its three-point edge before Bradley's attempt to tie missed in the closing seconds as the Panthers escaped at home.

Bradley shot 40.7 percent in the contest, while holding the Panthers to just 35.0 percent shooting. AJ Green, however, had a strong contest for Northern Iowa with 35 points, including seven 3-pointers.

The Braves look to return to their winning ways on Wednesday with another road Valley contest. Bradley meets Evansville with a 6 p.m. tipoff.

Game Notes: Kennell now has 999 career points and is one point shy of becoming the 49th Brave in school history to reach 1,000 for his career … Kennell also became the first Brave since Jeremy Crouch in 2007 to make at least three 3-pointers in seven-straight games … The Braves lost the rebounding battle for only the second time this season, ending an eight-game run with more boards … The Braves lost for the first time when allowing fewer than 70 points in a game – were 9-0 this season.
