Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Peoria, Ill. – The Bradley men's basketball team shot 54.0 percent, while holding Indiana State to just 35.2 percent from the field, en route to a 72-61 victory at Carver Arena on Wednesday night. The Braves improve to 17-9 on the season with an 8-5 Missouri Valley Conference record, while the Sycamores drop to 14-10 and 7-6 against league foes.

Junior Elijah Childs led the Braves in the winning effort, scoring 19 points for the second time in as many games since returning to the lineup, along with a team-best seven rebounds.

Senior Darrell Brown added 13 points with classmate Nate Kennell scoring 11 and junior Danya Kingsby also reaching double figures with 10 points.

Bradley led for nearly the entire game as a 3-pointer from Kingsby on the opening possession put BU in front. The Braves made seven of their first 10 shots in the game and quickly raced out to a 16-7 lead before the first media timeout of the contest. The Sycamores, however, fought back and didn't let BU run away at Carver Arena for the second-straight season – eventually pulling within two in the opening half, 24-22. Bradley's 50.0 percent shooting would be good enough though to send the home team into the locker room with a 33-29 advantage.

The Braves once again started the second half strong on the offensive end, making their first four shots in stretching their lead to nine, 42-33. BU eventually went ahead by double digits, 47-37, only for Indiana State to answer with a 14-4 run to tie the contest at 51 with 9:42 remaining.

The game would not remain tied for long, however, as Kennell buried a triple off a feed from Childs on the next possession. Childs then added a jumper the next time down the floor as Bradley quickly went back in front by five, 56-51, and never gave up the lead again. The BU defense anchored the last 10 minutes of the victory, allowing the Sycamores to hit only one of their final 13 field goals (7.7 percent). Bradley made 5-of-7 on its end to go with nine free throws for the 72-61 winning margin.

Now just one game out of second place in the Missouri Valley standings, the Braves hit the road for a key conference matchup on Saturday afternoon. Bradley is set to take on Southern Illinois with a 1 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network.

Game Notes: With his 13 points on Wednesday, Brown moved past Voise Winters for eighth in school history with 1,718 career points – Winters had 1,714 points from 1981 to 1985 … Childs is averaging 19.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in two games since returning from injury … Bradley has held its opponent to less than 40 percent shooting in 16 games this season … The Braves won for the first time this season when losing the battle on the glass (were 0-6) … The Braves earned their 14th victory at Carver Arena this season – their most in regular-season play since the 1993-94 campaign … Bradley and Indiana State split the season series for the third-straight year.
