Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
SAN ANTONIO – Senior SS Luke Shadid extended his season-spanning hitting streak to seven games by going 2-for-4 and junior LHP Brooks Gosswein completed 6.0 strong innings, but Incarnate Word starting pitcher Luke Taggart was up to the challenge, leading the host Cardinals (1-0) to a 5-0 win against Bradley (0-1) in the season-opener for both teams Friday night at Sullivan Field.

Gosswein (0-1) took the loss, despite allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his 6.0 innings Friday.  His 96 pitchers were just one shy of matching his career-high single-game total.   Taggart fanned 11 Bradley hitters in 8.0 innings, holding the Braves scoreless on five hits.

After UIW took a 1-0 lead on Landon Etzel's RBI triple in the third inning, the Braves appeared to be in position to answer when Shadid and 3B Brendan Dougherty opened the fourth inning with consecutive singles for Bradley's first two hits of the game.  Taggart got out of the jam, however, by getting Dan Bolt to fly out, Connor O'Brien on a strikeout and Keaton Rice to ground out.

Shadid (base hit) and Dougherty (walk) both reached safely to start the sixth inning, as well, but Shadid was thrown out trying to steal and Taggart again got Bolt to fly out and O'Brien on a strikeout to end that threat.  Bradley's only other base runner came in the seventh inning when Rice led off with a double, but Taggart again retired the next three Braves to keep the shutout in tact.

In addition to his RBI triple, Etzel walked and scored in the seventh inning.  Cardinals 2B Andy Rodriguez and DH Lee Thomas both went 2-for-4 with a RBI to highlight a 6-hit effort by UIW.

The teams will resume their season-opening, 3-game series with another 6:30 p.m. game Saturday night at Sullivan Field.  Junior college transfer Matt Hamilton is expected to get the start on the mound for the Braves.
