Braves Top UC Santa Barbara 6-4 To Open Gaucho Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Sophomore Lucy Mead scored twice and drove in a run in a 2-for-4 effort and junior Stacia Seeton drove in three runs to help highlight a 6-4 victory over UC Santa Barbara as Bradley Softball opened play at the 2020 Gaucho Classic Friday afternoon.
 
Bradley (8-6 overall) collected a season-high 12 hits with six different Braves having multi-hit games.  Junior Taise Thompson earned her first win of the year, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in relief of starter Grace French. 
 
Mead got the day started with a bunt single and stole second to lead off the top of the first before later scoring on a RBI single by Seeton to give Bradley an early 1-0 lead. 
 
The Braves pushed the lead to 5-0 with four runs in the top of the second.  Senior Allison Apke drew a leadoff walk and sophomore Samantha Smith, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, followed with a double to right center.  A walk by junior Vicki Zaluske loaded the bases with Bradley getting its first run of the frame on a two-out Brooklyn Bane infield single.  Seeton ripped a two-run double to left center to push the BU advantage to 4-0.  Senior Kealia Wysocki capped the scoring in the inning with a RBI single to left. 
 
Bradley got out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom half of the inning, but UC Santa Barbara (5-12 overall) got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the third.  Back-to-back singles by Sammy Fabian and Rayna Cohen to open the inning put runners at second and third with no outs.  A sacrifice fly by Teah Thies plated the first run of the inning and the Bradley lead was 5-2 after another sacrifice fly off the bat of Sierra Altmeyer.
 
The Braves left eight runners on base in the first four innings and the Gauchos scored two more in the bottom half of the fourth to pull within a run.  After a pair of singles and a two-out walk load the bases for Rayna Cohen, who collected a two-run double to left that cut the Bradley lead to 5-4.
 
Both teams left a pair of runners on in the fifth and Thompson retired the Gauchos in order in the bottom of the sixth, before the Braves were able to add an insurance run in the top of the seventh.  Smith started the Bradley half of the seventh with a single for her third hit of the day and moved to third thanks to a UCSB error when Zaluske reached on a fielder's choice.  Mead plated Smith from third with a sacrifice fly to right, pushing the Bradley lead to 6-4. 
 
UC Santa Barbara tried to rally in the bottom half, though, getting back-to-back singles to open the inning.  Senior Emma Jackson took over for Thompson in the circle to close things out.  A foul out, fielder's choice and fly out ended the threat from the Gauchos as Jackson earned her first save since her sophomore year. 
 
Bradley continues play at the Gaucho Classic this afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. (CST) game against Portland State.
