Softball Edges Portland State 2-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Freshman Morgan Radford struck out a season-high four in a complete game victory and junior Stacia Seeton hit her team-leading fourth home run of the year to highlight a 2-1 Bradley Softball victory over Portland State Friday afternoon at the Gaucho Classic.
 
Seeton smacked her fourth homer of the season and 25th of her Bradley career with a solo shot in the sixth as Bradley earned its fourth victory in its last five contests.  Radford improved to 2-2 with the complete game victory, taking a shutout bid into the seventh inning before Portland State (4-13 overall) managed to get on the scoreboard.
 
Portland State opened the game with a leadoff single in the first, but Radford retired the next three batters she faced to get out of the early jam.
 
Bradley (9-6 overall) was able to manufacture a run in the bottom half of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore Lucy Mead led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a groundout.  Mead stole third and was able to come home on a Portland State error on the play as the Braves led 1-0 after one inning of play.
 
Radford was able to work around a two-out double for a scoreless top of the second and sat the Vikings down in order in the top of the third. 
 
After Radford and the Braves retired Portland State in order again in the top of the fourth, Bradley threatened in the bottom half of the inning but left two on base.  Portland State got a leadoff double by Rachel Menlove in the top of the fifth, only to have Radford get a strikeout and a pair of fly outs to preserve the shutout.
 
Radford appeared to be in trouble again in the top of the sixth after Marrisa Bruno led off the inning with a single to left and advanced all the way to third on a BU error.  A groundout and a double play ended the threat, however, as Radford and the Braves would take a shutout into the seventh.
 
Seeton provided an important insurance run, leading off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to give Bradley a 2-0 lead. 
 
Portland State's Emily Johansen made it a one-run game with a solo homer of her own to open the top of the seventh as the Vikings cut the BU lead in half at 2-1.  Radford settled down to retire the next two batters and struck out Alexxis Ponce after a two-out single to close out the complete game victory.
 
Bradley continues play at the Gaucho Classic Saturday with an 11 a.m. (CST) game against tournament-host UC Santa Barbara, immediately followed by a 1 p.m. (CST) rematch with Portland State.
