Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
COOKEVILLE, TN – Bradley scored four runs in the eighth inning of game one and seven runs in the third inning of game two and rode the outbursts to a doubleheader sweep of host Tennessee Tech (3-6) Saturday at Bush Stadium.

The Braves (3-6) overcame a 3-0 deficit to earn a 6-3 win in the opener, then rode a 7-run explosion in the third inning of the nightcap for an 11-6 win to complete the sweep.  Senior LF Dan Bolt hit a home run in each game to lead the offensive effort.  In the nightcap, three Braves pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts, equaling the second-best single-game total in Bradley Baseball history and the most ever against a NCAA Division I opponent.

The teams will complete the 3-game weekend series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday at Bush Stadium.

GAME 1 RECAP | BRADLEY 6, TENNESSEE TECH 3
Junior LHP Brooks Gosswein (W, 1-2) turned in 7.2 solid innings and senior SS Luke Shadid reached base safely four times, leading the Braves to the 6-3 win.

Five consecutive Golden Eagles hitters reached safely in the second inning, allowing the hosts to jump out to a 3-0 lead, but Gosswein settled in to complete the longest outing of his career.  He scattered nine hits and walked four, but he also struck out four.  After allowing the first two hitters of the fifth inning to reach on a single and a walk, Gosswein induced a 4-6-3 double play, starting a stretch that saw him retire 10 of the final 12 batters he faced.

Redshirt junior Theron Denlinger worked the final 1.1 innings to record his first save of the season.  Denlinger walked one and gave up one hit, while striking out two.

The Braves began their climb out of the 3-0 hole in the fourth inning when Bolt drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on an O'Brien single.  Bradley would strand four runners in scoring position until Bolt pulled the Braves to within 3-2 by launching a one-out, solo home run in the seventh inning.

Bradley's go-ahead rally started when junior 2B Adam Rellihan was hit by a pitch to open the eighth.  Pinch-hitter Carl Valk and freshman CF Ryan Vogel both reached on bunts to load the bases and Shadid brought home the tying run by drawing a walk.  Senior 3B Brendan Dougherty was the fifth straight Braves hitter to reach when he followed with a go-ahead, 2-run single.  Shadid then scored the final run on a wild pitch.

GAME 2 RECAP
Bolt reached base four times in the night cap, beginning with a first-inning home run, his fifth of the season, but Tennessee Tech quickly reclaimed the lead by touching junior RHP Nick King for a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first.

Bradley's offense and pitching arms took over in the second inning, however.  The Braves scored three times in the second inning and seven times in the third to build an 11-2 lead, while the pitching trio of King (eight), Ryan Hodgett (five) and Taylor Catton (four) combined to strike out 17 Tennessee Tech hitters.  Although he wound up allowing five runs on five hits in his 4.1 innings, King (2-0) earned his second win of the young season, while Catton retired seven of the eight batters he faced en route to his first career save.

The three runs for the Braves in the second inning came without a hit as Bradley benefitted from three walks, two hit batters and an error.  While the Braves drew three more walks in the third inning, sophomore 1B Connor O'Brien delivered the big blow with a 3-run home run.  Rellihan (one RBI) and sophomore DH Connor Manthey (two) hit back-to-back, run-scoring doubles to get the third inning scoring started.

While Bradley's pitchers were busy striking out 17 hitters in the game, Tennessee Tech's five pitchers in game two combined to walk 13.  The 17 punchouts by the Bradley trio were the most for the Braves since recording 17 strikeouts April 14, 1999 against UIC.  Bradley also fanned 17 Iowa hitters April 14, 1967 in Iowa City.
