Game Recap: Softball |
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior Allison Apke had the first multi-homer game of her career and fellow senior Kealia Wysocki had a solo shot of her own, but UC Santa Barbara got a fifth inning grand slam from Ally Nodohara to top Bradley 6-4 Saturday morning on the second day of action at the Gaucho Classic.

Bradley's career home run lead, Apke entered the game with just two extra-base hits on the young season before hitting a two-run shot in the fourth to tie the game and a solo dinger in the sixth.  She drove in three in the loss to push her career RBI total over 100 in addition to collecting her 30th career homer.

UC Santa Barbara's Sammy Fabian led off the bottom of the first with a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by Rayna Cohen as the Gauchos grabbed a 1-0 lead.  Nodohara reached on a dropped third strike and eventually scored from third on a passed ball to put UCSB in front 2-0.

Bradley (9-7 overall) threated in the top of the second with Wysocki leading off the frame with a double and junior Taise Thompson adding a one-out single to put a pair of runners on.  A pop out and groundout ended the threat, however.

The Braves finally got to UCSB (6-13 overall) starter Emily Schuttish in the top of the fourth.  Sophomore Samantha Smith had a one-out double and Apke tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out, two-run homer to right.

After the pair of UCSB runs in the top of the first, Bradley starter Morgan Radford settled down to retire 12 consecutive batters before surrendering a one-out walk in the fifth.  The walk proved costly as the Gauchos loaded the bases with a two-out single and walk.  Nodohara made Bradley pay with a grand slam to right to put UC Santa Barbara back in front 6-2.

Bradley answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  Wysocki led off the Bradley half of the sixth with a solo homer, her 28th career home run.  Apke added a two-out solo homer of her own, cutting the Gauchos' lead to 6-4.  Sophomore Camryn Monteer followed with a walk, but the Braves were unable to get her home.

Thompson, who took over for Radford in the circle in the fifth, worked around a one-out single in the sixth as she tossed 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Sophomore Lucy Mead doubled down the right field line to start the top of the seventh for the Braves, but a line out and back-to-back pop outs closed out the 6-4 win for UCSB.

Radford took the loss for Bradley, scattering four hits over 4.2 innings of work.

The Braves continue play at the Gaucho Classic this afternoon with a 1 p.m. (CST) game against Portland State.
