Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Peoria, Ill. – Senior Darrell Brown scored 22 points and junior Elijah Childs added a double-double in his first game back in the lineup in more than a month as the Bradley men's basketball team defeated Evansville on Sunday afternoon, 69-58. The Braves improved to 16-9 overall with a 7-5 mark in Missouri Valley Conference action with the victory, while the Purple Aces are now 9-16 during the 2019-20 campaign.

Brown made 8-of-14 field goals for his 22-point performance in the victory to go along with a team-leading three assists. Childs, meanwhile, added 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds in his first action since injuring his hand on Jan. 4.

A strong start from Brown gave the Braves the early advantage. The senior guard reached double figures in just over seven minutes of action before the Braves used a 16-2 run to pull in front of the Purple Aces by 13 points, 28-15. Bradley made 7-of-11 field goals during the spurt, while holding Evansville to just 1-of-8 shooting to go with five turnovers. Brown's second foul of the half, however, gave Evansville a chance to regroup as the Aces pulled to within eight at the half, 34-26.

Bradley pushed its lead to 14 points, 44-30, early in the second half thanks to another 8-0 run. However, Evansville slowly made its way back into the game and used a 16-2 stretch to pull even at 46. The Purple Aces finally moved in front by one point, 54-53, with just under four minutes remaining only for Brown and Childs to come up big for BU and end any thoughts of Evansville completing the rally.

Just 12 seconds following Evansville's only lead in the second half, Brown drove to the basket for a layup and was also fouled to complete the three-point play and the 56-54 lead. Brown was again fouled on Bradley's next possession and after making the first free throw, Childs cleaned up the miss on the second attempt for a putback basket and just like that, Bradley was back in front by five points, 59-54, with three minutes left in regulation. On the defensive end, BU allowed Evansville to make only one of its final eight field goal attempts as the Braves made their free throws down the stretch for the 69-58 victory.

Bradley shot 49.0 percent in the winning effort, while holding Evansville to just 39.7 percent from the field. The Braves also won the glass, 38-31, scoring 38 points in the paint.

The Braves continue action at home on Wednesday, welcoming Indiana State to Peoria. The schools are set for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Carver Arena.

Game Notes: With his 22 points, Brown moved into ninth place in the school's all-time record book with 1,705 career points, passing Phillip Gilbert (1,689 points from 2000 to 2004) and Anthony Parker (1,683 points from 1993 to 1997) … Childs missed 12 of the last 13 games … Despite missing half of the season, Childs leads Bradley with four double-doubles this season … The winning team in all 12 of Bradley's MVC games this season also won the battle on the glass … BU inducted the Class of 2020 into the Bradley Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday – Stephanie Behrns, Ashley Birdsong, Jeremy Crouch and Rob Scahill … Bradley has won seven of the last eight matchups with the Purple Aces, including five-straight victories.
