PEORIA, IL - The 2020 Kaboom! Awards, presented by RE/MAX Traders Unlimited and supported by PNC, continue Thursday afternoon with the presentation of the finalists and announcement of the winner of the 37th Carl Grose Service Award.

The Carl Grose Service Award was established in 1980 in honor of Carl Grose, Bradley's long-time equipment manager and "Jack-of-all-Trades".  Mr. Grose, a Peoria resident, worked for the Athletic Department for approximately 50 years.  No job was ever too small for Carl.  He did everything from laundry and handling out equipment to cutting the grass.  He loved Bradley Athletics and working with the student-athletes.  This award was established to annually recognize a student-athlete who is committed to volunteerism on campus and in the local community.

Volleyball senior Kat Graf has been selected the recipient of the 37th Carl Grose Service Award from a pool of finalists that also included junior teammate Emma Raleigh and Baseball senior Luke Shadid.

Kat Graf, Volleyball, Sr., Edina, MN (Edina HS)
Graf's service efforts throughout her four-year career have been extensive on and off campus.  She began participating with the BU Clean Up Crew during the 2018-19 school year and served as the co-leader for the group this year as the Crew continued its weekly efforts to clean up litter on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods.  She also represented the BU Clean Up Crew at the Admissions Fair and the Fit Fair.  After donating blood during the 2017 Megan Fong Blood Drive, Graf volunteered during the event in 2019 and 2020, as well as assisting with set-up and clean-up during the 2018 Student-Athlete Picnic.

Among her off-campus activities, Graf has volunteered for various events at Lincoln Elementary School, Mark Bills Middle School, Pleasant Hill School and Whittier Primary School throughout her four years.  Notably, she served as a mentor through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for a young girl from Mark Bills School for two years.  Graf also has made tie blankets for homeless residents at the Peoria Dream Center and the finance major provided income tax return preparation assistance for low-income individuals through one of her Bradley courses.

Emma Raleigh, Volleyball, Jr., Cullowhee, NC (Smoky Mountain HS)
A two-year member of the Braves Council (student-athlete advisory council), Raleigh served as the group's vice president during the 2019 fall semester, before taking over as president for the 2020 spring semester.  In her leadership role, she has been on the planning committee for the 2019 and 2020 Bradley Student-Athlete Trivia Nights, while assisting with the Megan Fong Blood Drive, the Student-Athlete Picnic and the distribution of Kaboom! socks to students attending Athletics events.  She also represents the Braves Council with leaders from other student organizations in Student Advisory Committee meetings with the Bradley University Vice President of Student Affairs.

Outside of her activities with the Braves Council, Raleigh has visited Children's Hospital of Illinois the last two winters to distribute holiday cards to patients, while also volunteering at various community food pantries.  She also has assisted with Bradley University's annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week activities.

Luke Shadid, Baseball, Sr., Peoria, IL (Notre Dame HS)
Shadid was the co-leader of the Bradley Baseball team's efforts in 2020 on behalf of the Vs. Cancer Foundation, helping to raise more than $17,000 in the fight against pediatric cancer during this abbreviated season and more than $50,000 on behalf of the foundation during his four-year career.

In addition to his efforts during numerous Bradley Athletics events, Shadid participated with the BU Clean Up Crew in 2017 and 2018.  He also was a volunteer for the 2019 Soldier Dash 5K Obstacle Course Race, as well as the 2017 Children's Hospital Radiothon.  He also has volunteered more than 30 hours at the Zach McAllister Baseball Camp the last three winters and helped to usher guests during a pair of shows during the 2017 Bradley University Theater season.

The 2020 Kaboom! Awards are celebrating the year in Bradley Athletics by transitioning to a virtual presentation throughout the month of May. Each year on the final night of spring semester classes, the Bradley Department of Athletics gathers at Renaissance Coliseum for the annual Kaboom! Awards, an event modeled after the popular awards shows in the entertainment industry (Oscars, Grammys, ESPYs) and recognizes all of the graduating seniors, spotlights the team and individual achievements from throughout the year. Traditionally preceded by a red-carpet reception, the awards show is filled with video and graphic tributes, which will be presented this year through the Bradley Athletics website, BradleyBraves.com, and the department's social media accounts -- culminating with the announcement of the 67th Charles Orsborn Award May 29 and viewing of the Moments of the Year May 30.

The Kaboom! Awards will continue Friday with the announcement of the winner of the annual Charles Orsborn Award.
