Kaboom! Awards: Orsborn Award Finalist Nate Kennell

The 2020 Kaboom! Awards, presented by RE/MAX Traders Unlimited and supported by PNC, continues with a look at the first of four Charles Orsborn Award finalists, Men's Basketball student-athlete Nate Kennell.

Honoring Bradley's former four-sport student-athlete, Men's Basketball Head Coach and Director of Athletics, the Charles Orsborn Award is the most-prestigious honor Bradley University bestows upon a graduating senior student-athlete and recognizes the ability of the winner to combine athletic and academic success with community service. The award is selected by the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee (IAC), following a thorough review of all six nominees and interviews with the four finalists.

Helping the Bradley Men's Basketball program to back-to-back MVC Tournament titles for the first time in program history, Kennell was the 2019 Valley Sixth Man of the Year and a third-team All-MVC selection in 2020. After ranking fifth nationally by shooting 44.7 percent from 3-point range during his senior season in 2019-20, Kennell finished his career second in Bradley history with 253 career 3-point field goals and 29th with 1,236 career points scored.

Majoring in management information systems and carrying a 3.52 cumulative grade point average into the 2020 Spring semester, Kennell was a three-time MVC Scholar-Athlete, earning first-team recognition in 2020 after collecting second-team honors in 2018 and 2019. He also qualified for the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court in 2019, the MVC Honor Roll in each of his first three years and the Bradley Athletic Director's Academic Honor Roll four times.

Throughout his four-year Bradley career, Kennell has been involved with activities at the Peoria chapter of the Boys and Girls Club, as well as various events associated with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In addition to the community service activities with his Bradley teammates in Peoria, Kennell has volunteered every summer with the Metamora Grade School and High School basketball camps as a coach and referee, while organizing drills and competitions and speaking to the participants about the importance of education.

The 2020 Kaboom! Awards is set to celebrate Bradley Athletics during the month of May, transitioning to a virtual presentation throughout the month. Each year on the final night of spring semester classes, the Bradley Department of Athletics gathers at Renaissance Coliseum for the annual Kaboom! Awards, an event modeled after the popular awards shows in the entertainment industry (Oscars, Grammys, ESPYs) and recognizes all of the graduating seniors, spotlights the team and individual achievements from throughout the year. Traditionally preceded by a red-carpet reception, the awards show is filled with video and graphic tributes, which will be presented this year through the Bradley Athletics website, BradleyBraves.com, and the department's social media accounts -- culminating with the announcement of the 67th Charles Orsborn Award May 29 and viewing of the Moments of the Year May 30.
