Braves Fall in Rivalry Game

Normal, Ill. – A strong second half led Illinois State to a 71-56 victory against the Bradley men's basketball team on Wednesday night. The Braves are now 9-5 on the season and 3-2 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Redbirds improve to 5-8 and 2-5 in league play.
 
Senior Elijah Childs led the Braves with his third double-double of the season, scoring 14 points to go with 11 rebounds.
 
The Braves started the contest strong and gained an early 16-4 lead thanks to its play in the paint. Overall, the team's forward scored 20 of Bradley's first 22 points as Childs led the way with eight points in the first 10:42 with freshmen Darius Hannah and Rienk Mast each contributing six.
 
However, Illinois State chipped away at the Bradley advantage during the final 10 minutes of the opening period. Trailing, 22-13, the Redbirds tallied nine-straight points to square the contest. The schools then played an even final five minutes with Bradley heading into the locker room with a one-point edge, 31-30.
 
The Redbirds carried their momentum over to the second half as Illinois State scored the first seven points of the period for a 37-31 lead. An additional 8-0 run pushed a 43-36 lead to 15 points, 51-36, and the Braves were never within single digits the rest of the game.
 
Illinois State shot 43.3 percent in the winning effort with a 9-of-24 performance from 3-point range. Bradley made 40.0 percent of its baskets with a 6-of-23 mark from beyond the arc.
 
The Braves are back in action on Sunday afternoon, hosting in-state foe Loyola. Tipoff at Carver Arena is set for 3 p.m.
