Strong First Half Leads Loyola Past Braves

Peoria, Ill. – Loyola used a strong start to earn a 69-56 victory against the Bradley men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon. The Braves are now 9-6 on the season and 3-3 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Ramblers improve to 12-3 and 7-1 in league action.
 
Senior Elijah Childs led the Braves with 18 points and eight rebounds. Sophomores Sean East II and Ville Tahvanainen also chipped in 12 points apiece, while redshirt freshman Rienk Mast led the Braves with three assists.
 
The Ramblers were strong right from the start, outscoring the Braves, 22-2 in the first nine minutes of action. Loyola made nine of its first 13 baskets, while BU started 1-of-9 to go with five turnovers. The schools played a nearly even final 11 minutes of the half as Loyola headed into the intermission with a 43-19 advantage.
 
The Braves played a much better second half, outscoring the Ramblers, 37-26, after the intermission. Trailing 50-25, the Braves used an 18-4 run to spark some momentum for the team and pull within 11 points, 54-43, halfway through the period. Loyola, however, would score the next six points to move back in front by 17 as the strong first half held en route to the 13-point victory.
 
Loyola shot 56.0 percent in the winning effort, while the Braves made 45.1 percent of their field goals, including a 56.0 percent clip in the second half.
 
The schools wrap up the two-game series tomorrow night with a 6 p.m. tipoff on CBS Sports Network.
 
Game Notes: Childs extended his double-digit scoring streak to 15 games, becoming the first Brave to score at least 10 points in the first 15 games of a season since Jerome Robinson in 2000-01 … Bradley lost for the first time this season when shooting 45.0 percent in a game (were 8-0) … The 56.0 percent shooting by the Ramblers was a season high by a Bradley opponent … Loyola outscored Bradley in the paint, 50-26.
