Volleyball Falls In Season Opener At Illinois State

NORMAL, Ill. – After collecting a school season-record 24 double-doubles last year, junior Hannah Thompson picked up where she left off by tallying match highs of 11 kills and 15 digs; but Bradley Volleyball dropped its 2020-21 season opener 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 at I-74 rival Illinois State Monday.

Thompson's double-double was the 45^th of her career, which ranks fourth in Bradley history. Sophomore Karagan Coggin added six kills, while the freshmen duo of Abby Johnson and Doga Topcicek each had five kills to help lead Bradley offensively.

Illinois State (2-1 overall, 1-0 MVC) had to use a late push to take a tightly contested opening set that featured nine ties and two lead changes. Johnson pulled Bradley even at 18-18 with her third kill of the opening frame. The Redbirds answered with five straight points, however, and went on to take the first set 25-20.

Bradley (0-1 overall) put together its best offensive set of the night in the second, but Illinois State hit .333 in the set and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 victory. The Braves trailed 10-9 after a Thompson kill, only to have Illinois State respond with three straight points. A 5-1 Redbird run after another Thompson kill pushed the ISU lead to 18-11 as Bradley couldn't get any closer down the stretch.

The Braves found themselves in an early 4-1 hole to start the third set, but kept pace and eventually tied things up at 14-14 on an ISU error. Bradley used a timeout after a three-point spurt put Illinois State in front 17-14. A Johnson kill pulled the Braves within two (19-17) only to have the Redbirds rattle off six straight as Illinois State completed the sweep with a 25-17 win.

Bradley and Illinois State will meet again next week to close out the regular-season series, with the Braves hosting the Redbirds Monday, Feb. 1 in a 6 p.m. match at Renaissance Coliseum.
