Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- After falling behind two sets to one, Bradley Volleyball hit a blistering .395 between the fourth and fifth sets as the Braves rallied for a 25-18, 20-25, 23-25, 25-10, 15-10 victory over Southern Illinois Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

Bradley (6-8 overall, 2-1 MVC) went to a deciding fifth set for third time in the last five contests and fourth time this year, with the Braves pulling out a five-set victory after trailing 2-1 for the second time this season.  Senior Hannah Thompson led Bradley with a season-best 17 kills and also had 18 digs as she pushed her career dig total over 1,600 and is now one of just seven individuals in Missouri Valley Conference history with 1,100 career kills and 1,600 or more digs.

Senior setter Kora Kauling finished one kill short of a triple-double, collecting nine kills, 43 assists, 10 digs and four blocks.  Junior Carlee Camlin added a double-double of her own with 10 assists and 12 digs along with career-highs of five kills and four aces to help highlight the victory.  Fellow junior Karagan Coggin added 13 kills of her own, while junior middle blocker Raeann Bergman matched a season-high seven kills in addition to tying a career-best with eight blocks.

With the win, Bradley has won seven of the last eight meetings in the series with Southern Illinois (5-11 overall, 0-3 MVC).

The Braves took the opening set 25-18, using a late surge to pull away.  The BU lead was 16-15 when a Bergman block and Doga Topcicek kill pushed the advantage to three.  With Bradley leading 20-17, Thompson found the floor with a kill and Camlin sandwiched a pair of aces around a Coggin kill to give BU set point at 24-17.  Kauling's fourth kill of the set capped a 25-18 Bradley win.

SIU managed to take the second 25-20 to even things up at one set each.  The Salukis forced eight Bradley attack errors in the frame and were led by four kills from Nataly Garcia, who finished the night with a match-high 21 kills.

Bradley rallied to take a late lead after trailing for a bulk of the third set, but Southern Illinois managed to hold BU off despite the Braves hitting .333 in the stanza.  Southern Illinois led by as many as five (19-14) before Bradley rallied.  Thompson, who had seven kills in the third, had a pair of kills during a 5-1 BU spurt that cut the deficit to one 20-19.  Southern Illinois managed to push the lead back to two at 22-20 only to have Thompson's seventh kill of the set spark another 3-0 Bradley run.  Appearing in her first match as a Brave, freshman Silan Demirkol followed with back-to-back kills to give BU a 23-22 edge.  Garcia stopped the Bradley run with a kill, however, and followed a Bradley error with her seventh kill of the set to close out a 25-23 SIU victory that put the Salukis up 2-1 in the match.

In the fourth, Bradley jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back.  Coggin got things started with a kill and added a block during the opening salvo.  Bradley hit .414 in the set, breaking open what was a four-point contest at 8-4 with six consecutive points.  Camlin had a pair of kills and Coggin added another kill and block as the BU advantage ballooned to 15-4.  Back-to-back kills by Thompson later gave Bradley set point at 24-9 as the Braves forced a fifth set with a convincing 25-10 win.

The Braves continued the hot hitting in the fifth, collecting seven kills on 19 attacks with no errors (.368).  Southern Illinois lead early in the frame, but a 4-0 run that included back-to-back aces by Kauling put BU in front 7-4.  After a SIU point, another three-point spurt that included a Thompson kill and a block by Bergman and Camlin pushed the advantage to five (10-5).  Southern Illinois managed to get within three a couple of times down the stretch, but Kauling closed out a 15-10 Bradley victory with back-to-back kills as the Braves played their third consecutive five-set match at Renaissance Coliseum.

Bradley returns to action Saturday afternoon, hosting Missouri State in a 4 p.m. match at Renaissance Coliseum.
