Braves Sweep Weekly Cross Country Accolades

The Bradley cross country programs have momentum on their side as they head into the championship part of their season sweeping the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week.

Junior George Watson was named the male honoree after a school-record performance at Florida State, while freshman Nicola Jansen collected the female award after leading BU at the Bradley Pink Classic on Friday.

Running at one of the nation's most competitive regular-season meets, Watson placed 64th at the Pre-National Invitational in Florida. He ran the 8K course in 23:58.3 for the top time in the BU record book as Michael Ward had previously held the school standard with a time of 24:03.07, set in 2015.

The weekly honor is the second for Watson in three collegiate meets as he also collected the award after winning the Bradley Intercollegiate on Sept. 17.

In a meet that featured nine of the 10 Missouri Valley Conference schools, Jansen rose above the rest of the conference on Friday. The rookie placed fifth overall and first in the Valley, running the 6K course in 20:54.6. Her time is just fractions off the best mark by a Brave at its home meet, while also finishing with the fifth-best 6K time in school history.

The Braves are back in action on Friday with a small contingent of runners competing at the Illini Open before the teams travel to Illinois State for the 2021 MVC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 29.
