Silan Demirkol Named MVC Freshman Of The Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Freshman outside hitter Silan Demirkol (Istanbul, Turkey/Sevinc College) had a big impact in her first two outings as a Brave and has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week according to an announcement by the league office Monday afternoon.

After sitting out the first 13 matches of the season, Demirkol made her collegiate debut over the weekend to help highlight victories over Southern Illinois and Missouri State by averaging 2.50 kills per set, a team-best 4.25 digs, 1.00 assist and 0.38 aces per set in the wins. She came off the bench in the second set of Friday's five-set victory over Southern Illinois to tally six kills, 14 digs, one assist and one ace over the final four sets.

Demirkol, who hit .250 in the two contests, made her first career start Saturday against Missouri State, posting a double-double with 14 kills and a team-best 20 digs. She hit .355 in the four-set win against the Bears and also added seven assists, two aces and a block. Demirkol scored the final two points of the match, closing out a 25-12 fourth-set victory with back-to-back kills.

The MVC Freshman of the Week honor is the first for a Brave since current senior Hannah Thompson earned the honor a school record five times during the 2018 campaign.

Demirkol and the Braves return to action this weekend, opening a two-match road swing Friday with a 6 p.m. contest at Evansville.
