Game Recap: Volleyball |
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Bradley Volleyball had the longest single-season Missouri Valley Conference win streak in program history snapped at seven straight matches with Valparaiso ending the run with a 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 victory Saturday at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Despite the setback, Bradley (16-12 overall, 12-5 MVC) remains in a tie with I-74 rival Illinois State for second in the MVC standings at 12-5 heading into the final week of the regular season after the Redbirds dropped a four-set contest of their own at league-leading Loyola, which clinched at least a share of the MVC regular-season title Saturday night.

The Braves will close out the regular-season schedule next Friday at Illinois State, with the winner of that contest locking up a spot in the top two in the Valley standings along with a first-round bye for the upcoming MVC Tournament that will be held Nov. 25-27 in Normal, Ill.

Senior Hannah Thompson paced Bradley with her 18th double-double of the season and 76th of her career, finishing with a team-best 14 kills to go along with 14 digs.  Junior Karagan Coggin joined Thompson in double figures with 12 kills and attacked at a .320 clip.  Fellow junior Carlee Camlin added a double-double of her own with 19 assists and 11 digs.

Valparaiso (19-8 overall, 10-6 MVC) hit .378 in the opening set and claimed the first set 25-17 behind five kills from Elise Swistek, who tied for match-high honors with 15 kills.  The Beacons used a 6-1 spurt which included a pair of kills from Peyton McCarthy to build an early 11-4 lead.  Bradley never cut the Valpo lead under five down the stretch as the Beacons took the opener 25-17 despite five first-set kills from Thompson.

The Braves answered by hitting a blistering .400 in the second set.  After Valparaiso went out front early 7-5, Bradley rattled seven consecutive points to go in front 12-7.  Freshman Silan Demirkol had a block and two kills to help highlight the spurt.  The BU advantage was 21-20 when freshman Kaylenn Hunt had back-to-back kills and a Valpo error gave Bradley set point at 24-20.  The Beacons managed to get back within one at 24-23, thanks in part to a pair of kills from Haley Hunt, before Hunt capped a 25-23 Bradley win with her third kill of the set.  Coggin and Demirkol each had four kills to pace the Braves in the second.

In the third set, Bradley was within striking distance at 10-8 after a Coggin kill, but Valparaiso would blow things open with a 7-0 run.  Five BU errors during the Valpo push helped the Beacons build a 17-8 lead as Valparaiso went on to take the set 25-18.

The fourth set was close throughout before a late Valparaiso surge.  Thompson helped Bradley rally from an 11-6 deficit by scoring four straight BU points with three kills and a block assist as the Braves managed to get within two at 12-10.  The Beacons still had a two-point cushion at 19-17 when a Valpo block and BU error pushed the lead to four (21-17).  A Coggin kill pulled the Braves within three, only to have Valparaiso answer with three straight on back-to-back kills from Swistek and a kill by Hart.  A Valpo service error made it 24-19 before a Bradley error gave the Beacons the fourth set 25-19.

Hart and Swistek paced four Valpo players in double figures in kills with 15 each.  Bella Ravotto and McCarthy each added 10 kills for the Beacons, who sit in fourth in the MVC standings heading into next week's action.
