Game Recap: Volleyball |
NORMAL, Ill. – Senior Hannah Thompson moved into sixth in career kills at Bradley, finishing with a team-best nine kills and 12 digs to go with a pair of blocks, but I-74 rival Illinois State claimed a 27-25, 25-22, 25-10 victory over the Braves in a battle for second place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings Friday at Redbird Arena.

The loss, which closed out the regular season for Bradley, dropped the Braved (16-13 overall, 12-6 MVC) into third in the Valley standings with most Valley teams still having one game to play.  Fourth-place Valparaiso moved within a half game of the Bradley with a victory at Northern Iowa Friday.  The Beacons wrap up the regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon at Drake.

Thompson passed Abigail Kohnen (1996-99) on Bradley's career kills list, pushing her career total to 1,349 with the nine-kill effort.  In addition, Thompson climbed one spot on the MVC's career digs list into 18th and now owns 1,843 career digs.

The first set was close throughout, with Bradley using the longest run of the frame (4-0) to take a 15-12 midway through.  Illinois State (17-13, 13-5 MVC) answered with three straight points to tie it up at 15-15.  With the Redbirds holding a 23-21 advantage, the Braves came surging back with a kill from freshman Kaylenn Hunt and Carlee Camlin ace to knot the score at 23-23.  The teams traded sideouts with Bradley holding off a pair of Illinois State set points as Thompson's first kill of the night pulled the Braves even at 25-25.  ISU's Kaitlyn Prondzinski put the Redbirds in front with a kill and a block gave Illinois State the first set 27-25.

Bradley used an 8-0 surge in the second set that included four kills from Thompson to take a 13-9 lead.  The Redbirds managed to hang around, however, and eventually took a 21-20 lead with a 4-0 spurt of their own.  Back-to-back blocks by Thompson put Bradley in front 22-21, but Illinois State rattled off the final four points and claimed the second set 25-22.

Illinois State hit .379 in the third set, using a four-point push early in the stanza to take a 9-3 lead.  The Redbirds went on to complete the sweep with a 25-10 victory.

Prodzinski led Illinois State with a match-high 10 kills and was one of three Redbirds with nine or more kills in the contest.

The Braves will be back at Redbird Arena for next week's MVC Tournament, which will be held in Normal, Ill., held Nov. 25-27.  Seeding for the 2021 MVC Tournament will be determined during Saturday's action.
