Game Recap: Volleyball |
NORMAL, Ill. – Junior Karagan Coggin had eight kills and senior Hannah Thompson finished with seven kills and a match-high 20 digs, but Bradley couldn't keep pace with a hot-hitting Indiana State squad that attacked at a .308 clip as the Sycamores topped the Braves 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 Thursday night in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at Redbird Arena.

Indiana State (18-11 overall) used a balanced attack with five different players tallying at least seven kills and the Sycamores hit at a .308 clip in the contest to upset the #3 seed Bradley (16-14 overall).  The setback snapped a six-match Bradley win streak in the series.

Indiana State had six players with at least two kills and hit .282 in the opening set.  The Sycamores led 16-13 when a 3-0 spurt gave Indiana State its largest lead of the frame at 19-13.  The teams traded two-point spurts with the Braves eventually pulling within four at 23-19 on a block by Coggin and Kaylenn Hunt.  Indiana State answered with kills by Mallory Keller and Storm Suhre to close out a 25-19 victory.

In the second set, Indiana State snapped a 9-9 tie with three straight points and pushed the lead to as many as four (17-13).  Bradley managed to cut the deficit to two several times down the stretch, with the last coming at 23-21 on a Thompson kill.  Back-to-back Sycamore kills closed things out, however, as Indiana State took the second 25-21.

Bradley got off to a strong start in the third set as junior Raeann Bergman keyed an early five-point BU spurt with a pair of kills as she helped the Braves jump out to a 5-1 lead.  The Bradley advantage stood at 8-4 when Indiana State rattled off 11 straight points to go in front 15-8.  The Indiana State lead never dipped below seven the remainder of the frame as the Sycamores completed the sweep with a 25-15 win.

Indiana State advances to Friday's 6 p.m. semifinal against #2 seed and tournament-host Illinois State.
