Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Freshman Silan Demirkol notched a season-best 16 kills and junior Karagan Coggin added 10 kills of her own while hitting .556 as Bradley Volleyball stretched its season-long win streak to five with a 25-15, 25-17, 25-17 victory over Indiana State Friday at Renaissance Coliseum.

The Braves (14-11 overall, 10-4 MVC) secured their hold on third in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with the victory, completing the regular-season series sweep of Indiana State (13-10 overall, 5-8 MVC) and Bradley has now won six consecutive contests in the series against the Sycamores.

The sweep also moved the Braves within two games of league-leading Loyola, which fell at Valparaiso Friday, in addition to locking up a spot for Bradley in the six-team MVC Tournament which will be held later this month.  The Braves are 10-4 or better to start league play for the second consecutive year and fifth time overall.

Demirkol reached double figures in kills for the fourth time this season, collecting a match and season-high 16 kills while hitting .412.  Coggin had 10 kills on 18 swings with no errors as she attacked at a .556 clip to help pace the Braves.  Senior Kora Kauling finished a dig short of another double-double, tallying 27 assists and nine digs to go with three aces.

Fellow senior Hannah Thompson led Bradley's defensive efforts with 22 digs and also had seven kills to push her career totals to 1,299 career kills and 1,793 career digs as she closes in on becoming just the third player in Missouri Valley Conference history with 1,300 career kills and 1,800 career digs.

In the opening set, Kauling highlighted a 6-0 Bradley run with back-to-back aces and Thompson added a pair of kills to give the Braves a 12-6 advantage.  The lead was 17-13 when Bradley blew things open with another 5-0 spurt.  Coggin started the run with a block and Kauling chased back-to-back Indiana State errors with a kill.  Another Sycamore error pushed the BU lead to 22-13.  With Bradley leading 23-15, Thompson and junior Raeann Bergman combined for a block to give the Braves set point and Demirkol capped the 25-15 victory with a kill.

After Indiana State jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the second, Bradley used the first of two 7-0 second-set runs to go in front.  Thompson had three kills and a block during the first 7-0 spurt that saw the Braves build a 13-10 advantage.  BU held a 17-14 edge when Bradley again rattled off seven straight points again.  Freshman Kaylenn Hunt started things with a kill and Demirkol added three of her eight second-set kills during the run that gave the Braves set point at 24-14.  Demirkol's 11th kill of the night eventually closed out the 25-17 Bradley win.

The lead see-sawed back and forth early in the third set before the Braves took control.  With Bradley leading 13-12, the Braves scored five straight to open what turned out to be an 8-1 run.  Demirkol had a pair of kills and aces by Serena Sparks and Carlee Camlin highlighted the spurt that gave Bradley a 21-13 advantage.  Indiana State managed to get within five a pair of times down the stretch, with the last at 22-17, before Coggin's fifth kill of the frame made it 23-17 in favor of BU.  A pair of Indiana State errors gave the set to the Braves 25-17 to complete the sweep.

Bradley closes out the home schedule Saturday with a 5 p.m. match against Evansville.  Saturday's contest against the Purple Aces will mark Senior Day and Alumni Day with the BU's seniors recognized following the contest.
