Brookings, S.D. – A strong first half lifted host South Dakota State to an 81-65 victory over the Bradley men's basketball team in the season opener for both teams Tuesday night.

Junior Terry Roberts led the Braves with 15 points and five assists in his first Division I contest. Sophomore Rienk Mast added his third career double-double with 11 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Senior Ja'Shon Henry and sophomore Jayson Kent also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece.

South Dakota State started the contest strong and scored 10 of the game's first 11 points. Bradley quickly cut its deficit down to five points and remained within single digits until a late run by the Jackrabbits gave the home team a comfortable margin at the break. Leading 24-16, South Dakota State used a 19-3 run over the next five minutes to pull in front by 24 before heading into the locker room with a 47-26 advantage.

Bradley played much stronger in the second half, outscoring the Jackrabbits, 39-34. The Braves pulled to within 14 on a number of occasions but could not extend their runs to get any closer.

Overall, BU shot 36.8 percent in the contest, while holding South Dakota State to 33.3 percent. The difference for the Jackrabbits was on the free-throw line – making 28-of-29 from the charity stripe to nine makes for the Braves – and from beyond the arc (nine makes to six).

The Braves are back in action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Howard in their home opener. Tip off at Carver Arena is set for 2 p.m.

Game Notes: Mast's previous career high was 11 rebounds … Mast's 15 rebounds are the most by a Brave since Elijah Childs also had 15 against IUPUI on Nov. 9, 2019 … Bradley totaled eight blocks, including a career-best four from Darius Hannah, the most by a BU team against a DI school since collecting 12 against Southern Illinois in the 2019 MVC Tournament … Bradley is now 5-2 in season openers under Coach Wardle.
