Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Juniors Hannah Thompson and Kora Kauling each turned in double-doubles and Bradley Volleyball fell one dig short of matching the school record for digs in a three-set match as the Braves completed the regular-season series sweep of Indiana State Monday at Renaissance Coliseum with a 25-23, 25-17, 25-15 victory over the Sycamores.

Thompson, who joined Mary Kay Schmidt (1990-93) as the only players in program history with 800 career kills and 1,200 or more digs, finished with 10 kills and 20 digs to go with three blocks.  Kauling nearly had a double-double in the first set (eight assists & nine digs) and closed the night with 27 assists and 14 digs in addition to finding the floor with seven kills while hitting at a .400 clip as she posted her fourth consecutive double-double.

A night removed from a career-best 34 digs in Sunday's four-match opener against Indiana State, sophomore Serena Sparks matched Thompson for match-high honors with 20 digs.  Bradley held the Sycamores to .104 hitting and came up with 84 digs, one short of the school record for digs in a three-set match (85) set against Toledo on Sept. 1, 2018.  The 84 digs marked the third-best dig total in a three-set match in the nation this season.

Bradley (3-3 overall, 3-3 MVC) swept the regular-season series from Indiana State (2-5 overall, 2-4 MVC) for the second straight year and the Braves have now claimed five of the last meetings with the Sycamores.  In addition, Bradley earned its first three-set victory in the series with Indiana State dating back to a home win on Oct. 20, 2012.

In the opening set, Bradley led by as many as four points with the last such lead coming at 19-15 on a Karagan Coggin kill.  Indiana State chipped away at the Bradley advantage and eventually took a 23-22 lead thanks to a 4-1 spurt that included back-to-back kills by Karinna Gall.  Thompson put an end to the Indiana State run, however, with back-to-back kills of her own to give the Braves set point (24-23) and then put the finishing touches on a 25-23 BU victory with a solo block.

Bradley took control of the second set midway through, breaking open a one-point contest with a 4-0 run that included kills by Thompson, freshman Abby Johnson and sophomore Raeann Bergman as the Braves built a 10-6 advantage.  Thompson would go on to collect five of her team-best 10 kills in the second and also added a block down the stretch to help Bradley pull away to take the set 25-17.

Hitting .308 in the third set, Bradley blitzed the Sycamores early to build a 13-4 lead and forced Indiana State to burn both of its timeouts during the opening salvo, that featured three kills and four assists from Kauling.  The BU lead was 16-10 when the Braves used a 6-0 run to put things out of reach.  Three Indiana State errors and kills by Thompson, Bergman and Johnson highlighted the run as the Braves cruised to the 25-15 victory to complete the three-set victory along with the series sweep.

With the 10-kill effort, Thompson moved into 22nd in career kills at Bradley with 834 kills during her two-plus years.  She also became just the 10th player in program history to reach 1,200 career digs as she climbed four spots into eighth all-time (1,204 career digs) on The Hilltop.

Bradley returns to action next weekend, opening a two-game series at Evansville Sunday with a 6 p.m. match.
