Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Junior Stacia Seeton belted her 26th career homer, but Western Illinois pitchers limited Bradley Softball to a combined eight hits as the Leathernecks took both games of a season-opening doubleheader from the Braves by the scores of 6-1 and 5-0 Friday afternoon at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome.

Seeton provided the only run of the day for Bradley (0-2 overall) with a solo homer to leadoff the bottom of the fourth inning of the day's first game.

Sophomore Grace French started the opener in the circle for Bradley, working around a leadoff walk in the first and one-out single in the second for scoreless innings and she notched BU's first hit of the season with a single in the bottom of the first.

Western Illinois (5-1 overall) managed to strike for three runs in the top of the third, however, loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk for Savannah Rodriguez; who ripped a bases-clearing double to right center to give the Leathernecks a 3-0 lead.

WIU tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth after loading the bases with just one out.  Two runs came home on a Maddy Anderson single to left center and Kyra Kroll later delivered a two-out, pinch hit single that pushed another run across to extend the Leatherneck advantage to 6-0.

Seeton got Bradley on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, leading off the frame with a solo homer to left center.  The Braves threatened to add more later in the inning with junior Jillian Navarro ripping a two-out triple, but Western Illinois starter Abby Carlin got a fly out to end the threat.

Carlin, who struck out 11 in the opener, retired Bradley in order in both the fifth and sixth; surrendering a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh before closing out the complete game victory as the Leathernecks took the opener 6-1.

In the nightcap, Rodriguez started the game in the circle for WIU and carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning.  A Navarro single to open the bottom of the fourth broke up the no-hit bid, but three Western Illinois hurlers combined for a four-hit shutout.

Rodriguez helped her own cause with a RBI double in the top of the first on the heels of a RBI infield single by Piper Foote as the Leathernecks jumped in front 2-0.  WIU added a run in the second, getting a run on a Jorja Hudson RBI single to right center.

Foote helped Western Illinois break the game open in the fifth.  Ami Ill led off the frame with a comeback single and Foote smacked a two-run homer down the line in left to give Western Illinois a 5-0 lead.

Bradley's best scoring chance in the day's second game came in the bottom of the seventh.  Junior Taise Thompson had a one-out single to center to get things started.  A diving catch by Alyssa Ealy in right field robbed Smith of a base hit.  The Braves had runners at second and third after a two-out double by Avry Blume, but WIU hurler Maddy Anderson got a strikeout to close out the 5-0 win for the Leathernecks.

Bradley returns to action Monday, hosting Saint Louis in an 11:30 a.m. single game at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome.
