Game Recap: Volleyball |
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Junior Hannah Thompson turned in her seventh double-double of the year with 15 kills and 14 digs, helping Bradley Volleyball to a 29-27, 25-19, 25-14 victory at Evansville Monday night as the Braves extended their win streak to four straight.

Bradley (5-3 overall, 5-3 MVC) got off to a slow start, needing a late push to take the opener.  After fending off eight Evansville (3-7 overall, 2-6 MVC) set points in the first set to take the frame 29-27, the Braves controlled throughout the other two sets to sweep the series finale.

Monday's win was Bradley's seventh straight in the series with the Purple Aces, one short of matching the longest BU win streak in the series that dates back to a stretch between the 1986 season into the 1996 campaign.

Bradley matched a season-best with 11.0 blocks in the victory, forcing Evansville into 25 attack errors while holding the Aces to an .095 hitting percentage.

Thompson hit .317 in the three sets, posting a team-best 15 kills to go with two aces, 14 digs and a block.  Sophomore Raeann Bergman collected eight kills with no errors and five blocks and fellow sophomore Karagan Coggin came up with a team-best six blocks (two solo).  Junior Kora Kauling had a streak of five consecutive double-doubles snapped, but finished with six kills, 30 assists, eight digs and three blocks.  Freshman Maddie Peterson helped headline Bradley's defensive efforts with a season-best 17 digs.

Bradley found itself in an early hole in the first set after Evansville raced out to a 10-3 lead.  The deficit reached as large as nine (18-9) before the Braves would storm back. BU used a 6-2 spurt that included three kills by Bergman to get within five at 20-15, but Evansville was able to answer and eventually held set point at 24-18.

An Evansville service error kept the Braves in the set and sparked what would turn out to be a 6-0 BU run.  Coggin chased another Aces error with an ace as Evansville called timeout leading 24-21.  Thompson had a kill out of the timeout and Bergman followed with one of her own to make it a one-point deficit at 24-23.  Another Evansville timeout led to a Thompson kill to tie it up at 24-24, only to have UE's Alondra Vazquez put the Aces back in front 25-24 with a kill.

A Kauling kill knotted the score again and Thompson gave Bradley set point at 26-25 with her seventh kill of the set.  The score was tied yet again (26-26) after an Evansville kill and the Aces held their eighth set point after a block.  The Braves weren't done, however, with Thompson's eighth kill of the set forcing a 27-27 tie.  Bradley held set point again at 28-27 after an Evansville error and junior Kat Poore put the finishing touches on a 29-27 BU win with a kill.  Thompson finished with eight kills and six digs to highlight the opening-set win.

Bradley led for most of the second set, but used another strong finish to put the Aces away.  A block by Thompson and Bergman gave the Braves an 18-14 lead, but Evansville was able to rattle off four straight to pull even at 18-18.  Bradley answered with six straight points of its own, however, and used a 7-1 spurt to take the second set 25-19.  Bergman highlighted the deciding run with a pair of kills and a block as the Braves held the Aces to just nine kills and forced Evansville errors in the frame.

The third set was never in doubt with Bradley scoring the first six points of the set on its way to a commanding 10-1 advantage.  Coggin had a pair of kills and two blocks during the opening 6-0 salvo to help the Braves take control.  Thompson would add six kills with no errors in the third set as Bradley completed the sweep with a 25-14 third-set win.

The Braves return to action next weekend, opening a two-game series with Southern Illinois Sunday at 3 p.m. at Renaissance Coliseum.
