Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Peoria, Ill. – The Bradley men's basketball team returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a 74-66 victory against Southern Illinois at Carver Arena. The Braves are now 10-10 on the season with a 4-7 record in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Salukis slip to 8-7 and 2-7 against league foes.

Junior Terry Nolan Jr. led the Braves with a season-best 23 points – making 7-of-10 field goals and 3-of-5 beyond the arc. Senior Elijah Childs added his sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while classmate Danya Kingsby paced the Bradley attack with a game-high four assists.

The Braves started the contest and led by as many as nine points, 20-11, midway through the period. The Salukis would answer, however, and used a 10-0 run to pull in front by one, 21-20. Southern Illinois stretched its advantage to three, 28-25, but the Braves used 7-0 run to reclaim its advantage before a triple by SIU at the buzzer sent the teams into the locker room with Bradley ahead by one, 32-31.

The Braves came out firing in the second half and back-to-back 3-pointers by Childs and Nolan on the first two possessions quickly stretched the advantage to seven points, 38-31. The Salukis would cut their deficit down to one but Bradley answered with seven-straight points for a 47-39 advantage.

The swing of momentums would continue, however, as Southern Illinois finally pulled even in the second half with 9:49 remaining, tying the contest at 52. However, the Braves would not allow the Salukis to move in front as a 3-pointer by Rienk Mast put Bradley in front for good, 57-54. Leading by three, 64-61, Nolan then connected on a key triple – his third of the game – before rookie Jayson Kent made a 3-pointer of his own on the next possession to stretch BU's edge to seven points, 70-63, with just 3:49 remaining.

The Salukis were never within a single possession the remainder of the game as the Braves calmly made their free throws down the stretch for the eight-point victory.

Bradley made 44.9 percent of its shots with a 10-of-23 performance from beyond the arc. The Salukis connected on 43.1 percent of their field goal attempts with an 11-of-22 performance from 3-point range but just an 11-of-19 day from the charity stripe.

The schools wrap up the two-game series tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. tipoff at Carver Arena.

Game Notes: Bradley's victory was the 1,700th in school history … The Braves are 9-2 this season when scoring at least 65 points in regulation … Bradley also improved to 8-1 when attempting more free throws in a game … BU made 20-of-21 free throws on the day with its 95.2 percent rate with at least 20 makes its best since going 27-of-28 against Creighton during the 2010 MVC Tournament … Childs has recorded a double-double in three of the last four games after collecting three in the first 16 contests of the season … Kevin McAdoo made his first appearance for the Braves since Dec. 22 after a leave of absence due to family reasons … Bradley has won four-straight over the Salukis for the first time since a 10-game winning streak in the series from 1984 to 1989.
