Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Peoria, Ill. – Southern Illinois used a second-half run to pull in front of the Bradley men's basketball team and then secured the win with a free throw with 2.3 seconds remaining for a 69-68 win at Carver Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Braves are now 10-11 on the season with a 4-8 mark in Missouri Valley action, while the Salukis are 9-7 and 3-7 in conference play.

Junior Ja'Shon Henry led the Braves with 17 points, while freshman Rienk Mast added 14 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

For the second-straight contest, Bradley used a strong start to the game to gain some early momentum. After both teams started strong offensively, the Braves used 19-7 stretch over four and a half minutes to turn a 19-15 deficit into a 34-26 lead. BU maintained its advantage until the halftime break, heading into the locker room with a six-point edge, 43-37.

Southern Illinois was able to turn things around in the second stanza and an early 11-2 spurt put the visitors back in front by two points, 50-48. The Salukis stretched their lead to as many as nine points, 64-55, with 8:10 remaining before the Braves made their move.

Henry keyed a late 13-4 stretch as Bradley knotted the game at 68. The junior forward scored the final six points of the run as he single-handedly turned a 68-62 deficit into a 68-68 contest with 1:24 remaining.

Bradley forced an SIU miss on its next possession but a shot-clock violation gave the ball back to the Salukis with 22.7 seconds remaining. Southern Illinois was able to draw a foul with 2.3 seconds remaining and converted the second of two shots from the charity stripe for the one-point lead. Bradley's final attempt at the buzzer was off as Southern Illinois secured the 69-68 win.

Bradley made 45.5 percent of its field goals on the day, while the Salukis converted 47.4 percent and 11-of-31 from the free-throw line.

The Braves are back in action on Wednesday, playing at Valparaiso with a 6 p.m. tipoff.

Game Notes: Bradley lost for just the second time this season (in 10 occasions) when attempting more free throws and just for the third time in 12 games when scoring at least 65 points in regulation … Mast made a career-best four 3-pointers on Sunday and was 7-of-11 from behind the arc in the weekend series against the Salukis … The loss snapped Bradley's four-game winning streak in the series.
