Game Recap: Volleyball |
DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior Hannah Thompson turned in her 46th career double-double, finishing with 17 kills and 24 digs to pace Bradley Volleyball in the series opener at Drake Sunday afternoon, but the Bulldogs forced the Braves into 31 errors and took the match 25-11, 25-18, 16-25, 25-17 at the Knapp Center.

Thompson moved into 14th in school history in career digs in addition to becoming the 25th player in Bradley history to reach 800 career kills in the loss that dropped the Braves to 1-2 on the young season.  She finished with team highs of 17 kills and 24 digs.  Junior Kora Kauling added a career-best 10 kills and also had 32 assists and six digs, while sophomore Karagan Coggin chipped in with nine kills and three blocks for Bradley.

Haley Bush and Emily Plock tied for game-high honors with 18 kills each to lead Drake (5-1 overall, 3-0 MVC) to the victory with the Bulldogs hanging onto first in the MVC standings.

Drake forced 12 errors in the first set, cruising to a 25-11 victory after jumping out to a 6-1 lead to start the contest.

After just one kill in the first set, Thompson took over for Bradley in the second frame where she tallied six kills without an error, three digs and a block.  Drake hit .275 in the set however, and took control of the contest with a 4-1 spurt midway through to build a six-point advantage at 13-7.  Bush had eight second-set kills to help power Drake to 25-18 win.

The Braves controlled from the outset in the third set after Coggin opened the stanza with back-to-back kills and freshman Doga Topcicek added one of her own.  Topcicek added another kill as she helped BU jump out to a 7-1 lead.  Drake pulled to within two points and the Bradley lead was four (14-10), before a 9-1 run by the Braves gave BU a commanding lead.  Kauling had three of her five third-set kills during the spurt that gave Bradley a 23-11 lead as the Braves eventually took the set 25-16 to extend the match.

Drake forced another 10 BU errors in the fourth, controlling from the outset as the Bulldogs won the set 25-17 to close out the four-set victory.  Thompson had four kills and eight digs in the fourth, but Bradley managed to hit just .040 in the frame.

Thompson passed Stephanie Behrns for 14th on Bradley's career digs list and now has 1,135 digs in her two-plus seasons.  She also moved into a tie with Behrns for third in career double-doubles in school history with the 46th of her career.

Bradley and Drake close out the two-game series Monday with a 5 p.m. match at the Knapp Center.
