Game Recap: Volleyball |
DES MOINES, Iowa – Three Braves turned in double-doubles and four individuals had 11 or more kills, but Bradley Volleyball dropped the series finale at Drake Monday afternoon with the Bulldogs claiming a 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-19 victory at the Knapp Center.

Junior Hannah Thompson turned in her third double-double in four outings, finishing with a team-high 12 kills to go with a season and match-best 26 digs.  Fellow junior Kora Kauling turned in her second straight double-double as well, collecting a career-best 11 kills along with 45 assists and seven digs.  Freshman Doga Topcicek chipped in with season-highs of 11 kills and 23 digs for her first career double-double, while sophomore Karagan Coggin added a season-best 11 kills in the setback.

Both teams had strong offensive performances in the first set with Drake (6-1 overall, 4-0 MVC) countering Bradley's .314 first-set attack percentage by hitting at a .324 clip.  The opening set featured nine ties and one lead change with Drake using a 6-1 spurt midway through to break a 10-10 tie.  The Bulldogs extended the lead to as many as seven points down the stretch and took the first set 25-19.

Bradley (1-3 overall, 1-3 MVC) evened it up at one set each with a 25-18 victory in the second.  After the offenses shined in the first, defense took over in the second with Bradley tallying 38 digs in the frame.  Thompson collected an impressive 14 digs in the second to highlight the defensive effort, while Topcicek added 10 digs and four kills to highlight the BU win.

The Braves led 18-17 in the second when junior Kat Poore followed a Drake service error with a kill to give BU a 20-17 advantage.  After a Drake point, Coggin sparked a 5-0 Bradley run with back-to-back kills.  Kauling added a kill of her own and a Poore ace gave BU set point (24-18) when a Topcicek kill capped the 25-18 Bradley victory.

Bradley hung with Drake throughout the third set, trailing 16-14 on the heels of a Coggin kill.  The Bulldogs answered with three straight to push the lead to five (19-14), only to have the Braves eventually get back within two (21-19) after a Topcicek ace and kills by Thompson and Coggin.  Drake scored four of the next five points, however, claiming the set 25-20 to go up two sets to one.

The Bulldogs took control of the fourth set from the outset, jumping out to an 8-1 lead.  Bradley clawed back into it, thanks in part to four fourth-set kills by Thompson, eventually pulling within two at 16-14.  The deficit was still two at 18-16 when Drake's Jada Wills sandwiched kills around a BU error to quickly push the lead back to five.  The Bulldogs hit .395 in the fourth set and eventually took the set 25-19 to close out the four-set victory.

Bradley returns to action next week, hosting Indiana State in a two-game series that begins with a 3 p.m. match Sunday at Renaissance Coliseum.
