Winkler Named MVC Offensive Player of the Week

Third-year sophomore recorded his first career goal and assist, leading Braves to a season-opening win against Eastern Illinois

ST. LOUIS – Third-year sophomore defender Malte Winkler (Eppingen, Germany) made the most of his second career start last week against Eastern Illinois and Tuesday he was recognized for his efforts in Bradley's 3-2 win when he was named the Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement from the league office this afternoon.

Winkler, who had appeared in only six games during his first two seasons at Bradley, received his second career start at right back in Wednesday's season-opener against the Panthers at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome. He scored his first career goal in the 66th minute, pushing the Braves (1-0) out to a 2-0 lead. After Eastern Illinois had trimmed its deficit to 2-1, Winkler forced an EIU turnover deep in the Bradley offensive end and slotted a pass to freshman Patrick Fishburne for the game-winner in the 80th minute to earn his first career assist.

Winkler appeared in six games as a true freshman in 2018, including his first career start Oct. 16, 2018 in a 3-1 win against Omaha. He redshirted the 2019 season due to injury. Coupled with Wednesday's win against Eastern Illinois, the Braves are now 2-0-0 with Winkler in the starting lineup.
