Volleyball Tops SIU In Four To Push Win Streak To Six

PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley Volleyball extended its win streak to six matches and strengthened its hold on second in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 25-19 victory over Southern Illinois Monday at Renaissance Coliseum.
 
Junior Hannah Thompson, who moved into 18th in career kills at Bradley and notched her 900th career kill, turned in her ninth double-double of the year (17 kills & 11 digs) to help lead the Braves (7-3 overall, 7-3 MVC).  Sophomore Karagan Coggin and Raeann Bergman each added 12 kills in the victory, while junior setter Kora Kauling served up five of Bradley's season-high 10 aces to go with five kills, six digs and a season-best 50 assists.
 
The Braves earned their sixth consecutive MVC victory for the team's longest conference win streak since winning the first six league matches of the 2005 season.  Currently alone in second in the MVC standings, Bradley is 7-3 or better to start Valley play for the fifth time in program history and second time in the last three seasons.
 
Southern Illinois (2-10 overall, 1-9 MVC) led for a good portion of the first set and held an 18-13 advantage before the Braves came roaring back.  A 7-0 Bradley run that included a pair of kills and a block from Bergman along with two kills from Thompson put BU in front 20-18.  Bergman added another kill down the stretch and Thompson served up an ace, helping Bradley take the first set 25-20.
 
Thompson accounted for four of Bradley's first five points of the second set with kills and the Braves jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one of Kauling's five aces on the night.  Bradley hit a blistering .389 in the second set, cruising to a 25-13 victory to take a two-set lead.  Thompson had five kills on just eight swings and six digs in the second, while junior Kat Poore collected four kills on eight attacks and eight digs in the frame. 
 
Bradley led 15-13 midway through the third set before Southern Illinois made a late push to force a fourth set.  The score was knotted at 19-19 after a Thompson kill, when SIU rattled off four straight to build a 23-19 lead.  Back-to-back kills by Bergman and Thompson cut the deficit to two (23-21), only to have the Salukis answer with a Morgan Taylor kill and a BU error as SIU took the third 25-21. 
 
The Braves took control of the fourth set early on, racing out to an 8-1 lead.  Kauling served up two more aces during the opening spurt that also included back-to-back Thompson kills.  Southern Illinois clawed back into the contest, eventually pulling within three points at 21-18 on a Tatum Tornatta kill.  Coggin's 12th kill of the night pushed the BU advantage back to four (22-18) and Thompson's 900th career kill followed to make it a 23-18 lead.  Thompson chased a SIU point with her match-high 17th kill of the night to give Bradley set point and a SIU attack error closed out the 25-19 BU victory.
 
The Braves have now won six of the last seven meetings with Southern Illinois and swept the regular season from the Salukis for the second time in last three campaigns. 
 
Bradley returns to action next weekend, opening a road series at Valparaiso Sunday with a 3 p.m. contest.
