Game Recap: Softball |
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Avry Blume hit her first career homer to highlight the day for Bradley Softball, but Missouri Valley Conference preseason favorite Southern Illinois held the Braves to just two runs as the Salukis took both games of Saturday's doubleheader 6-1 and 4-1 to open a three-game series at Charlotte West Stadium.

Bradley (9-9 overall, 2-3 MVC) managed just three hits in Saturday's series opener against Southern Illinois (22-5 overall, 4-3 MVC) with Blume highlighting the day's first game with her solo homer in the fourth.

SIU struck first on the day, plating a pair in the bottom of the third.  With a runner on and two outs, Bailey Caylor kept the inning alive with a bunt single and Maris Boelens followed with a RBI single up the middle.  Jenny Jansen reached on an error that would have ended the inning and allowed Caylor to race home as the Salukis took a 2-0 lead.

Blume led off the Bradley half of the fourth with her solo homer on the first pitch of the at bat, cutting the SIU lead in half at 2-1.

Southern Illinois broke the game open with a three-run fifth, however.  Sidney Sikes led off the frame with a double and came around to score on a Maddy Vermejan single.  Caylor drew a walk and stole second before she and Vermejan both scored on a single by Boelens that pushed the lead to 5-1.

SIU added an insurance run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single Aubree DePron and Sarah Harness, who took over in the circle in the fifth for the Salukis, struck out a pair in a scoreless seventh to close out the victory for Southern Illinois.

Grace French took the loss for Bradley, scattering five hits and four runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of work as she fell to 4-3 on the year.

Bradley outhit SIU 8-6 in the nightcap, but a two-run homer Katelyn Massa helped the Salukis complete the doubleheader sweep with a 4-1 victory.

Southern Illinois took advantage of a Bradley error in the bottom of the first with Vermejan reaching to open the bottom half of the first.  A single and two-out walk loaded the bases for Massa, who gave her team a 1-0 lead with a bases loaded walk.

Bradley got the run back in the top of the second.  Taise Thompson led off the frame with one of her three hits on the day and French followed with a single of her own.  A single off the bat of Stacia Seeton loaded the bases and Olivia Bradley knotted the score at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to left.  SIU starter Carlee Jo Clark got a groundout to end the threat, however.

Massa helped the Salukis jump back in front in the third.  Caylor singled to open the SIU half of the third and Boelens reached on a fielder's choice.  With two outs and a runner at second, Tori Schullian ripped a RBI single to center to drive in Boelens, who was credited with scoring due to obstruction as the Salukis went ahead 2-1.  Massa followed with a two-run homer to left, pushing the lead to 4-1.

The Braves put base runners on in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, but were unable to get anyone home.  BU's best chance came in the fourth after back-to-back singles by French and Seeton.  Harness, who earned the save in the opener, came on in relief of Clark to get a groundout and strikeout to end the Bradley threat.

BU couldn't take advantage of leadoff singles in both the fifth and sixth along with coming up empty in the seventh after a two-out double by Camryn Monteer as the Salukis took the day's second game 4-1.

Morgan Radford evened her record at 4-4 with the loss in the nightcap.

Bradley and SIU close out the three-game series Sunday with an 11 a.m. game at Charlotte West Stadium.
