UNO Walks Away with Series Opener, 5-0

New Orleans took advantage of 11 walks to take the opening game of the weekend series at Maestri Field

NEW ORLEANS – Host New Orleans worked four Bradley (1-3) pitchers for 11 walks and turned that generosity into five runs as the Privateers (5-4) took a 5-0 win in the opener of the non-conference weekend series Friday night at Maestri Field.
 
Bradley starter Dalton Mall (L, 0-1) became the first Braves pitcher to strike out more than five hitters in his debut game last week against Ball State, but the hard-throwing right-hander could not command the strike zone against the Privateers.  Mall allowed only one hit and struck out three in his 2.2 IP, but he was undone by six walks, including four straight with two outs in the second inning to give UNO the only scoring it would need.
 
Mall's counterpart, UNO starter Chris Turpin (W, 2-0) was in complete control for the hosts, scattering three hits and walking one with 11 strikeouts in his 6.0 IP.
 
Both teams managed only five hits.  Bradley freshman CF Ryan Vogel was 2-for-4, while UNO RF Gaige Howard was 2-for-5 with a home run.
 
The teams will return to Maestri Field for Game 2 in the weekend series at noon Saturday.  The series finale has been moved up one hour to assist with Bradley's travel schedule and now will start at 11 a.m. Sunday.
