Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Freshman McKenna Scheib collected 11 kills and hit at a .588 clip in her first career start to highlight the final match of the 2021 CEFCU Invitational for Bradley Volleyball, but DePaul hit .287 as a team as the Blue Demons topped the Braves 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 Saturday night at Renaissance Coliseum.

Scheib was the only Bradley (0-3 overall) player to reach double figures in kills, finishing with 11 kills on just 17 attacks with one error for a .588 hitting percentage.  She notched six of her 11 kills in the third and final set, needing just nine swings in the stanza.

Senior Hannah Thompson finished one kill short of her third double-double of the year, closing the match with nine kills and match-high 21 digs.  Junior Carlee Camlin added a double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs, while junior Karagan Coggin and sophomore Abby Johnson each contributed eight kills for the Braves.

The first set went back and forth with seven lead changes and 11 ties.  Bradley held its largest lead of the frame at 13-11 following a Johnson kill and BU's last lead of the set came at 16-15 on the heels of a DePaul (2-1 overall) service error.  A pair of aces sandwiched around a pair of Bailey Nelson kills put DePaul in front 19-16, however.  The Braves pulled within one on back-to-back kills by Coggin and Thompson, only to have DePaul answer with a pair of its own.  The Blue Demons held set point at 24-20 after a pair of Emma Price kills and eventually claimed the set 25-22 on a Jill Pressley kill.  Thompson had five kills and nine digs to lead Bradley in the opening set.

A Camlin ace opened the second set for the Braves and Bradley jumped out to an early 3-1 lead.  The Braves led for most of the early stages of the frame, taking a 14-10 advantage after a Doga Topcicek kill.  DePaul answered with six straight points and used an 8-1 run to go in front 18-15.  The Braves pulled even at 18-18 on a Coggin ace, but DePaul's Hannah Karl had three kills during a 4-0 spurt that put the Blue Demons ahead 22-18.  Pressly later put the finishing touches on a 25-20 DePaul win with her seventh kill of the night.

In the third set, Bradley found itself trailing 19-12 before clawing back into the contest with six straight points.  Scheib started the outburst with one of her six third-set kills and Thompson followed with her only kill of the frame.  A kill from Kora Kauling made it a 19-15 deficit and sophomore Jasmine Green added one of her own to make it a three-point difference.  Thompson served up an ace and Scheib followed with another kill as the Braves pulled within one at 19-18.  After the teams traded kills, DePaul's Aly Kindelberger made it a two-point cushion with a kill and a BU error pushed the Bradley deficit to 22-19.

The Braves got back within one at 22-21 with a Kauling ace chasing a Coggin kill, but DePaul got kills from Nelson and Price and a BU error sealed the 25-21 win for the Blue Demons.

Pressly collected 13 kills and 20 digs to lead DePaul, which finished second at the CEFCU Invitational.

Southeast Missouri State swept Central Michigan earlier in the afternoon to wrap up the CEFCU Invitational with a perfect 3-0 record.  SEMO's Laney Malloy was named the CEFCU Invitational Most Valuable Player and was joined on the CEFCU Invite All-Tournament Team by Claire Ochs (SEMO), Tara Beilsmith (SEMO), Jill Pressly (DePaul), Rachel Krasowski (DePaul), Savannah Thompson (Central Michigan) and Bradley's McKenna Scheib.

Bradley returns to action next weekend, opening the Golden Grizzlies Classic Friday with a 5 p.m. (CDT) match at Oakland.
