Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Hannah Thompson notched her 60th career double-double and junior Karagan Coggin added 12 kills of her own, but Southeast Missouri State collected 17 blocks as the Redhawks topped Bradley Volleyball 25-18, 25-17, 24-26, 25-14 Saturday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum during the final day of the CEFCU Invitational.

A day removed from breaking Bradley's career digs record, Thompson posted the 60th double-double of her career as she tied Coggin for team-high honors with 12 kills and also added 16 digs.  Thompson moved into 11th in career kills at Bradley, passing Laura Benzing on BU's all-time chart and needs just 11 kills to break into Bradley's career top 10 in the category.

Coggin joined Thompson in double figures with 12 kills, while fellow junior Carlee Camlin added two kills, 28 assists, an ace, eight digs and three blocks in the setback for the Braves (0-2 overall).

Southeast Missouri State (2-0 overall) took the opening two sets behind 10 kills and six blocks from Talia Gouard in the first two frames.  The Redhawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but the Braves hung close before Gouard helped SEMO pull away.  Bradley trailed 18-16 after a Rachel Pranger kill, when Gouard had two kills and two blocks to push the Redhawk advantage to 22-16.  Gouard added two more kills down the stretch to help SEMO take the opener 25-18.

Trailing for most of the second set, Bradley was still within striking distance at 19-16 following an Abby Johnson kill.  SEMO's Elissa Moylan had a pair of kills and Gouard added two more blocks during a 4-0 Redhawk run that pushed the advantage to 23-16.  SEMO claimed the second set 25-17 to go up 2-0 in the match.

Thompson helped highlight a 26-24 third-set win for the Braves with five kills, 10 digs and a block in the third.  With the score knotted at 21-21, freshman McKenna Scheib had a kill and block to put Bradley in front 23-21.  The Braves held set point at 24-21 after a SEMO error, but the Redhawks got back-to-back kills and a block from Zoey Beasley to pull even once again at 24-24.  Thompson's fifth kill of the set and 10th of the contest gave Bradley a 25-24 edge and a SEMO attack error sealed the 26-24 victory for the Braves.

SEMO took control of the fourth early on, jumping out to a 9-3 lead.  Camlin capped a 4-1 BU spurt with an ace as the Braves pulled to within three points at 10-7.  Back-to-back SEMO blocks highlighted a 5-1 Redhawk run, however, that saw the lead pushed to 15-8.  Leading 19-13, SEMO rattled off five straight points to hold match point and eventually closed out the contest with a 25-14 fourth-set victory.

In the day's first match, DePaul swept Central Michigan in three sets 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 as both squads evened their records at 1-1.

The CEFCU Classic continues this afternoon with Central Michigan facing Southeast Missouri State at 4:30 p.m. followed by Bradley and DePaul playing at 7 p.m. on ESPN3 to close out the tournament.
