Game Recap: Volleyball |
VERMILLION, S.D. – Bradley Volleyball hit a season-best .313 in the match and received a season-high 16 kills from senior Hannah Thompson as the Braves swept Central Arkansas 25-23, 25-20, 25-15 Friday afternoon to wrap up play at the South Dakota Classic.

Turning its best hitting percentage (.313) since the final home match of the 2019 season (.319 vs. Indiana State), Bradley boasted its highest attack percentage in a road or neutral site contest dating back to a .337 outing at Southern Illinois on Sept. 21, 2018.

Thompson helped headline the Bradley (2-6 overall) attack with a season-best 16 kills to go with 11 digs as she posted her sixth double-double of the season.  The senior outside hitter attacked at a .438 clip, with just two errors on her 32 swings.  Joining Thompson in double figures in kills was sophomore Doga Topcicek with 12, while junior Karagan Coggin finished the contest with nine kills and four blocks.

Thompson tallied six kills, five digs and three assists to help highlight a 25-23 first-set victory for the Braves.  With Central Arkansas leading 19-18, Thompson rattled off three straight kills to give the Braves a 21-19 edge.  Bradley held set point at 24-22 following an Abby Johnson kill and Topcicek's third kill of the set closed out the 25-23 BU victory.

After notching her 1,100th career kill early in the first set, Thompson collected another six kills in the second set to power the Braves to a 25-20 win.  Bradley never trailed in the second and broke things open midway through with a 6-1 run.  Thompson sparked a 4-0 spurt with a kill and the run included kills from Johnson, Topcicek and Coggin along with a block by Johnson and Raeann Bergman as the Braves built a 16-10 advantage.  Central Arkansas pulled within three points (23-20) late, before a Topcicek kill and Coggin block sealed the 25-20 victory.

Central Arkansas led early on in the third, but Thompson would help Bradley take control with three kills and a block during a 7-0 BU run that put the Braves ahead 15-9.  UCA pulled within three at 17-14 when Coggin would help put things away for Bradley.  A block and two kills by Coggin along with a Serena Sparks' ace highlighted a 6-0 spurt that pushed the BU advantage to nine (23-14).  Topcicek followed a Central Arkansas kill with her 12th kill of the afternoon to give the Braves match point (24-15) and Coggin's ninth kill of the contest served as the final point of the convincing 25-15 Bradley win.

Sparks led Bradley's defensive efforts with a match-high 21 digs as she helped the Braves limit Central Arkansas to an .070 hitting percentage.  Bergman paced Bradley at the net with a season-best six blocks.

Bradley returns to Renaissance Coliseum next weekend, opening the CEFCU Classic Friday Sept. 17 with a 12:30 p.m. match against North Dakota.  The Braves will also face Northern Colorado next Friday at 7 p.m. to close out the first day of action of the 2021 CEFCU Classic.
