Game Recap: Volleyball |
PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Hannah Thompson had another efficient outing, collecting a match-high 12 kills and hitting .300 as she helped power Bradley Volleyball to a 25-16, 25-14, 25-14 sweep of North Dakota Friday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum to open play at the 2021 CEFCU Classic.

Bradley (3-6 overall) hit .253 as a team, thanks in part to Thompson and fellow senior Kora Kauling who came off the bench to tally a season-best nine kills while attacking at a .400 clip.  Kauling also dished out 22 assists and had four digs and an ace as the Braves won back-to-back matches for the first time this season.

With her 12-kill effort Thompson passed Amy Angelos (1,124 career kills) on the Bradley career kills list and now ranks ninth in Bradley history with 1,125 career kills.

In the opening set, Bradley took control with a 6-0 run to blow open what was a one-point contest at 15-14.  Sophomore Doga Topcicek, who had five kills and six digs in the first set, started the run with a kill and followed back-to-back North Dakota (1-9 overall) errors with an ace.  Kauling and junior Karagan Coggin teamed for a block after a timeout by the Fighting Hawks and another North Dakota error gave the Braves a commanding 21-14 lead.  Bradley held set point at 24-16 when Thompson's fourth kill of the set capped a 25-16 BU victory.

The Braves hit a blistering .406 in the second set and cruised to a 25-14 win.  Aces by Serena Sparks and Rachel Pranger helped highlight a 7-1 BU run to open the frame and the Bradley advantage was 10-6 when the Braves would pull away.  A 7-0 spurt that included two kills and a block from Thompson along with an ace and kill from Kauling gave Bradley a 17-6 advantage.  Thompson, who had six kills with no errors on just nine attacks in the third, closed out a 25-14 BU win with back-to-back kills.

Bradley forced 10 North Dakota errors in the third set as the Fighting Hawks hit -.132 in the frame.  With the score knotted at 4-4, the Braves rattled off eight consecutive points to seize control.  A North Dakota error and Thompson kill started the spurt that included a pair of Topcicek aces, a Coggin block and Kauling kill to give Bradley a 12-4 edge.  The lead never dipped below seven the rest of the stanza as the Braves cruised to another 25-14 to complete the sweep.

Topcicek finished with nine kills, 10 digs and three aces.  Pranger came off the bench to post a match-high 13 digs to go with a career-best seven assists.

Earlier in the day Northern Colorado edged Saint Louis in five sets in the first match of the CEFCU Classic.

The CEFCU Classic continues this afternoon with Saint Louis and North Dakota playing at 4:30 p.m. followed by Bradley facing Northern Colorado in a 7 p.m. contest.
