Game Recap: Volleyball |
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Playing at Northern Iowa to open Missouri Valley Conference play for the first time since 2004, Bradley Volleyball dropped the league opener 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 Friday night at the McLeod Center.

Senior Hannah Thompson led the Braves (4-8 overall, 0-1 MVC) with eight kills and also had a block and five digs in the setback, while junior Serena Sparks notched a team-best 14 digs to help lead Bradley.

Northern Iowa (6-8 overall, 1-0 MVC) used a 6-0 run midway through the first set to take control and eventually took the opening set 25-20.  Bradley pulled even at 12-12 on a Karagan Coggin kill, before the Panthers rattled off six consecutive points to build an 18-12 advantage.  Thompson, who had five kills on 13 swings in the opening set, helped Bradley get back into it with two kills and a block during a 6-2 BU spurt that pulled the Braves within two at 20-18.  UNI scored the next two points out of a timeout, however, and four of the next five as the Panthers went on take the frame 25-20.

Bradley jumped in front 3-1 early in the second set and led as late as 11-10 before Northern Iowa used a 9-2 push to build a 19-13 lead.  UNI collected six blocks in the second and got six kills from Emily Holterhaus in the stanza with the Panthers going up 2-0 in the match with a 25-18 victory.

Northern Iowa hit a blistering .424 in the third set and completed the sweep with a 25-14 win.  Holterhaus, who finished with a match-high 13 kills, added five more kills in the third and the Panthers also got five kills on five swings from Taylor Alden in the third frame to complete the sweep.

Bradley closes out the first MVC road swing of the season Saturday with a 6 p.m. match at Drake.
