Game Recap: Volleyball |
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Bradley Volleyball got a career-best 18 kills from junior Karagan Coggin and senior Hannah Thompson moved into the school's career top 10 in kills, but Oakland held off a BU rally attempt in the fifth set to top the Braves 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 17-25, 16-14 Friday at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational.

Coggin helped force a deciding fifth set with six kills on just seven attacks in a 25-17 fourth-set win for Bradley (0-4 overall).  The Braves rallied from four down in the fifth set to eventually pull even at 14-14 before Oakland (1-3 overall) got a kill from Jamie Walling and a Haley Brown ace to claim the fifth 16-14 and win the match.

Coggin topped her previous career-high of 14 kills set in February against Indiana State before the end of the fourth set and finished with a match-high 18 kills while hitting at a .405 clip.  Thompson, who notched her 61st career double-double, matched her season high of 14 kills and also had 16 digs as she passed Blythe Zajakowski (1988-91) for 10th on Bradley's career kills list.  Junior Serena Sparked helped lead the BU defensive efforts with a season-best 29 digs.

Oakland took advantage of 11 Bradley attack errors in the opening set and took control midway through with a three-point spurt that put the Golden Grizzlies in front 19-13.  The Braves cut the deficit to four, only to have Oakland go on to take the opener 25-19.

Thompson came alive in the second set as she and fellow senior Rachel Pranger each collected five kills and five digs in the frame.  Bradley hit .224 as a team in the set, using a late spurt to pull even the match.  The Braves led by as many as five in the second a pair of times with the last coming at 12-7, before Oakland managed to chip away at the BU advantage.  The Golden Grizzlies tied it up at 19-19, only to have Bradley go back on top.  With BU holding a 23-22 edge, Pranger gave Bradley set point with her fifth kill of the stanza and Kora Kauling sealed the 25-22 BU victory with one of her five kills on the night.

Oakland jumped out in front early in the third set and led by as many as seven points (16-9) midway through the set.  Oakland ended up posting a 25-19 victory to take a two-sets-to-one lead in the contest behind five third-set kills from Brittany Welch.

After notching a combined nine kills in the first three sets, Coggin took over the in fourth to tally six of Bradley's 12 kills in the frame.  She capped a 3-0 Bradley spurt midway through with a kill that gave the Braves a 17-11 advantage.  The lead later ballooned to seven at 20-13 on a Karina Simatos ace.  Bradley closed out the convincing 25-17 victory with a 3-0 run that included a block by Kauling and freshman McKenna Scheib, a Thompson kill and Oakland error.

The Braves found themselves in an early hole in the fifth after Oakland jumped out to a 5-1 advantage.  Back-to-back Coggin kills highlighted a 5-1 Bradley spurt that pulled the Braves even at 6-6.  With the score knotted at 8-8 after a Thompson kill, Oakland rattled off four straight to go in front 12-8, only to have the Braves answer with another flurry.  A pair of Oakland errors sandwiched around a block made it 12-11 in favor of Oakland.  Bradley later fought off a pair of match points with Oakland committing an error and Pranger and Scheib teaming for a block to once again tie things up at 14-14.  Walling put Oakland back in front, however, with a kill and an ace by Brown gave the Golden Grizzlies the fifth set 16-14.

Bradley closes out play at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 2 p.m. (CDT) match at Eastern Michigan.
