Braves Drop Opener To Weber State

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Sophomore Jordy van der Werf hit her first career home run with a three-run blast in the second, but Weber State rallied for five runs to edge the Braves 5-3 Friday morning in the season opener for both teams at the Grand Canyon Kickoff Classic.
 
Playing in her home state for the first time in her collegiate career, van der Werf delivered a three-run dinger in the top of the second to give Bradley (0-1 overall) a 3-0 lead.  The homer by the Tucson, Ariz., native came with two outs in the inning after sophomore Addison Pettit drew a walk and senior Grace French followed with a double to open the frame.
 
French started in the circle for the Braves and gave up just one hit while facing the minimum through the first two innings.  Weber State, which is the Big Sky Conference preseason favorite, left a pair on in a scoreless bottom of the third before finally getting to French in the fourth.
 
The Wildcats had one on and two out in the fourth when pinch runner Makayla Donahoo stole second and came around to score on a single off the bat of Faith Hoe.  Another single put runners at first and third for Abigail Sagert, who tied things up at 3-3 with a two-round double to right field.
 
French, who struck out five and walked none in a complete game effort, retired Weber State (1-0 overall) in order in the fifth, but the Wildcats struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
One-out singles by Mariah Ramirez and Hoe put runners at the corners and a pinch hit double from Daisy Taloa drove in both base runners to put Weber State in front 5-3. 
 
Bradley got a two-out double by Samantha Smith in the top of the seventh, but couldn't push another run across as Ramirez notched her 12th strikeout of the contest to close out the 5-3 win for Weber State.
 
The Braves return to action this afternoon, facing Kansas in a 4:30 p.m. (CST) contest to close out the first day of competition at the GCU Kickoff Classic.
