Softball Falls To Northern Colorado

PHOENIX, Ariz. – After topping Northern Colorado 6-3 earlier in the day, Bradley Softball dropped the rematch with the Bears 10-1 Saturday afternoon at the GCU Softball Complex to wrap up the second day of action at the Kickoff Classic.
 
Senior Camryn Monteer collected two of Bradley's three hits in the contest, going 2-for-3 for the second consecutive game to help lead the Bradley (1-3 overall) offensive efforts. 
 
Northern Colorado (1-3 overall) slugged out 13 hits in the outing and broke the contest open with a six-run fourth.
 
Monteer led off the game with a single and the Braves had two on base after a Lucy Mead walk, but Bradley left runners on the corners in a scoreless top of the first.
 
Northern Colorado was the first team to get on the scoreboard, pushing two runs across in the bottom of the second.  Jayden Mercado followed back-to-back singles with one of her own to drive in the first run of the contest.  The Bears added another run later in the inning on a RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Monteer had another leadoff single in the third, only to have Northern Colorado starter Meghan Golden get out of the inning unscathed with a strikeout, groundout and pop out. 
 
A leadoff walk and Bradley error in the bottom of the third helped lead to a Northern Colorado run and the Bears added another unearned run later in the inning to push the advantage to 4-0.
 
In the top of the fourth, freshman Abbott Badgley led things off with a single and came all the way around to score on a double by senior Keeler van Breusegen.  The Braves were unable to push another run across in the frame, however, trailing 4-1 heading to the bottom half of the fourth.
 
A six-run bottom of the fourth for Northern Colorado pushed the lead to 10-1.  With runners at second and third and one out, the first run of the inning came home on a sacrifice fly.  Jenna Kobernick drove in another run with a RBI double and another run came in on a BU error.  RBI singles by Peyton Gale and Mercado pushed the Bears lead to 9-1 and it was a 10-1 advantage for Northern Colorado after scoring on a squeeze play. 
 
Golden worked around a two-out hit batter for a scoreless fifth to close out the 10-1 win for Northern Colorado.
 
Bradley closes out play at the GCU Kickoff Classic Sunday with a 3 p.m. (CST) game against tournament-host Grand Canyon.
