Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Senior Grace French limited Loyola to just five hits, but the Ramblers got a two-hit complete game shutout from Peyton Pepkowski as Bradley Softball fell 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

French pushed her streak of consecutive innings without an earned run to 16 innings, keeping Loyola (7-11 overall, 1-0 MVC) off the scoreboard until the top of the fourth.  She struck out five in the first three frames and matched a season-high with six strikeouts on the day.

Pepkowski (5-3) matched French (2-6), however with both hurlers taking one-hit shutouts into the fourth.

Loyola's only hit in the first three innings was a Haley Wallace double to leadoff a scoreless second inning and Bradley's lone hit in the first three frames was a two-out Camryn Monteer triple in the third that the Braves (12-12 overall, 0-1 MVC) weren't able to take advantage of.

The Ramblers did all of the scoring in the contest in the fourth.  Amelia Thomas opened the frame with a double down the left field line.  Tori Boysen drove her home with a single up the middle and later came home on a bloop single from Ava Beineman that glanced off the glove of French as Loyola grabbed a 2-0 advantage.

French retired Loyola in order in both the fifth and sixth innings.  Bradley was unable to get to Pepkowski, however, coming up empty after a two-out walk in the fourth and stranding a runner at third in the fifth.

French worked around a two-out Teagan Sopczak double for a scoreless seventh and the Braves tried to rally in the bottom half of the inning.  Senior Samantha Smith led off the Bradley half of the seventh with a single to left for BU's second hit of the afternoon.  Pepkowski got a lineout, strikeout and popout to close out the shutout as Loyola took the contest 2-0.

Pepkowski struck out nine and walked two in the complete game two-hit shutout for the Ramblers.

French scattered five hits and walked just one in the setback.

Bradley and Loyola close out the three-game series Sunday with a noon doubleheader at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
