Young Distance Runners Start Strong

Sophomore Max Dieterich and freshman Michael Rebello opened the Raleigh Relays in impressive fashion Thursday

RALEIGH, NC – A pair of youthful Bradley men's distance runners, sophomore Max Dieterich and freshman Michael Rebello, opened the 2022 outdoor track championships with impressive showings in day one of the three-day Raleigh Relays Thursday evening at Dail Soccer Field/Track Complex.

Dieterich opened the meet for the Braves by running a strong race in the ninth of 15 sections of the 1,500 meters. Dieterich, who finished sixth in the mile at the 2022 MVC Indoor Track Championships last month, raced to a second-place finish in his 14-man section of the 1,500 meters Thursday. His time of 3:47.82 was just one one-hundredth of a second off his personal best, the fifth-best clocking in program history, set during last season's Joe Walker Invite at Ole Miss and he was third among Missouri Valley Conference runners while besting 2022 MVC Indoor Championships mile runner up Jake Gillum (Illinois State) by 1.18 seconds. At 48th among the 200 finishers from the 15 section races of the 1,500 meters Thursday, Deiterich was faster than 30 runners who competed in the six sections that followed his grouping.

After sweeping the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters at the 2022 MVC Indoor Championships, freshman Michael Rebello followed with a strong effort of his own in his collegiate outdoor season debut Thursday by posting a time of 14:16.68 in the 5,000 meters, two seconds off his indoor personal best. Running in the seventh of 10 sections Thursday, Rebello twice led his grouping, before finishing sixth among the 24 in the section. Rebello took the race lead during sixth of 13 laps, then worked his way off the rail to race around the lead grouping for a brief run in front during the 10th lap. Rebello's time ranked 12th among the 163 finishers through the first seven sections and ended up 53rd among the night's 223 total competitors to complete the 5,000 meters.

Friday will feature a full day of competition split between day two of Raleigh Relays and the one-day Billiken Invitational, hosted by Saint Louis. While 16 Bradley men's and women's student-athletes will compete in eight events in Raleigh, another 22 Braves will participate in 14 events in St. Louis. Shae Fuller will start the Friday's action in the Raleigh Relays triple jump, which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET, while the Billiken Invitational will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT with the women's long jump, featuring Kesley Dalton and Kyra Koontz, the first event for the Braves.

Each day of the Raleigh Relays will include a 2-hour block of video streaming coverage on ACC Network Extra, which is available through the ESPN app with an ESPN+ subscription.
