McDonnell Demolishes PR in Bryan Clay 5,000 Meters

AZUSA, CA – Competing in the Heat Four of the Women's 5,000 meters at the Brian Clay Invitational, Sophia McDonnell demolished her personal record by more than 22 seconds with a time of 16:59.92.

McDonnell was running her first outdoor 5,000 meter race since last season's Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where she placed sixth in a time of 17:56.58. It was just the third outdoor 5,000 meters of her career. McDonnell's previous PR of 17:22.66 came last season at the Illinois State Invitational.

McDonnell had competed in two races prior this spring, both of which were the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

She was the third Bradley runner to compete on the day, with Sophomores Wilma Nielsen and Tiana LoStracco racing the 800 meters earlier. LoStracco will return to the track Friday by again running the 800m at the Mt. Sac Relays. The Women's 800m at Hilmer Lodge Stadium is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. PT (5:30 CT) Friday.

Bradley has 24 student-athletes signed up to compete in 17 events Saturday during the second day of the Redbird Challenge at rival Illinois State University's Redbird Track & Field Complex. Sophomore Sierra Bryant is scheduled to get Saturday's action started for the Braves by competing in the Women's Shot Put at noon. Sophomore Noah Costa will close out this week's action on the track by running in the Men's 1,500m at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
