Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Freshmen Abbott Badgley and Addie Welsh each had multi-hit outings to lead Bradley, but Evansville used a three-run sixth to break open a tie game as the Aces took the rubber match of the three-game Missouri Valley Conference series by the score of 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

Welsh went 2-for-3 with a run and Badgley was 2-for-4 with a RBI as the duo helped Bradley (22-21 overall, 10-10 MVC) outhit Evansville (23-20, 8-12 MVC) 9-6 in the contest.  The Purple Aces collected eight walks, however, and took control late with a three-run sixth to break a 3-3 tie.

Evansville got on the scoreboard first, plating a run in the top of the first.  MacKenzie McFeron led off the contest with a double to right center and scored on an Alexa Davis double to left center to give the Aces an early 1-0 lead.

Bradley answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to go in front 2-1.  With two on and two out, Badgley ripped a RBI single to right center that scored senior Grace French, who has now reached base safely in a career-best 17 consecutive contests after a first-inning single.  Senior Samantha Smith scored later in the inning on a dropped pop fly in the infield that would have ended in the inning to give the Braves a 2-1 advantage.

One of four leadoff walks for Evansville led to a run in the second, with Alex Barnaby scoring on a fielder's choice.  Evansville added another run in the third after drawing three straight two-out walks to load the bases.  Haley Woolf ripped a single through the right side of the infield to plate a run as the Aces grabbed a 3-2 lead.

Bradley knotted things up at 3-3 with a run in bottom of the fourth.  Welsh led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Fellow freshman Katie Pederson drove in Welsh from second with a single up the middle.

A three-run sixth put Evansville back in front.  The Aces had two on after a walk and hit batter to open the inning.  McFeron drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out infield single and two more runs came home on the second double of the day for Davis as Evansville retook the lead at 6-3.

Bradley tried to rally in the sixth with the Braves getting a single from Welsh and a walk from Pederson to put two runners on.  With runners at the corners and two out, senior Lucy Mead was called out for interference at the plate on a pick-off throw to first to end the inning, however.

Evansville starter Sydney Weatherford retired the Braves in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the complete game victory.

Seven different Braves collected hits in the game with Mead extending her career-best hit streak to 13 straight games with a second-inning single.

Bradley opens a four-game road swing Wednesday with a 5 p.m. game at I-74 rival Illinois State to finish out the three-game series with the Redbirds.
