Game Recap: Baseball |
Carbondale, Ill. – The Bradley baseball team earned its first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon, claiming the series finale at Southern Illinois, 9-5. The Braves improve to 8-14 on the season and 1-2 in league action, while the Salukis drop to 20-8 and 2-1 versus conference foes.

Redshirt freshman Peter Hansen was one of four Braves to collect multiple hits in the winning effort to go with a career-best three RBI. Junior Connor Manthey and sophomore Carson Husmann added a pair of hits, including one home run each, while sophomore Ryan Vogel rounded out the multi-hit Braves.

Seeing his first extended action of the season due to an early-season injury, graduate student Matt Hamilton earned his first win of the year on the mound – needing just 55 pitches to get through 5.0 innings of work, while allowing just three hits and zero runs.

The Braves led from the start on Sunday with a pair of solo home runs giving the visitors the lead for good. Manthey gave BU a 1-0 edge with his second homer of the season in the third inning before Husmann doubled the advantage with his fifth in the fourth. Bradley then added to its lead when Jackson Chatterton doubled Husmann in in the sixth for a 3-0 score.

The Salukis attempted to fight back but the Braves always had the answer on Sunday. After SIU scored two on back-to-back solo shots in its half of the sixth, Bradley immediately added four in the seventh for a 7-2 lead. After scoring one run via an error, Hansen drove in two with a single before Manthey added an RBI double for the five-run advantage.

Southern Illinois countered with three runs in bottom of the seventh off a pair of RBI singles only for Bradley to again quickly respond with two runs in the top of the eighth for a 9-5 advantage. Vogel drove one in with an RBI single before scoring himself via a safety squeeze from Hansen for the four-run lead.

Junior Eli Campbell finished it from there, not allowing a run in the final two innings for his first career saves and the 9-5 Bradley victory.

After playing its first 22 games of the 2022 season on the road, the Braves are finally set to make their Dozer Park debut on Wednesday. Bradley welcomes Iowa to Peoria for a 6 p.m. first pitch in its home opener.
