Game Recap: Softball |
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Bradley Softball bounced back from a loss in the series opener at Missouri State with a 9-1 victory over the second-place Bears as the teams traded run-rule victories Saturday afternoon at Killian Stadium to open a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series.

Sophomore Camryn Schaller held Missouri State (23-16 overall, 16-5 MVC) to just one hit in the five-inning complete game effort to earn the victory in game two.  The Braves used a seven-run fifth inning to blow open what was a one-run game at that point to take the second game of the twinbill 9-1.  Missouri State took the series opener 10-1 earlier in the day.

Freshman Abbott Badgley had three hits on the day and now has the longest active hit streak on the team at seven consecutive games after going 3-for-5 with a double, one run and one RBI Saturday.

In the nightcap, Freshman Addie Welsh had the big hit of the seven-run fifth inning for Bradley, delivering a two-out, three-run homer to cap the scoring.  Senior Lucy Mead, who had a career-best 14-game hit streak snapped in the opener, opened the scoring in the fifth with a RBI single to right to give the Braves a 3-1 edge.  Senior Grace French followed with a two-run single to left and senior Samantha Smith drove her home from second with a RBI double after a pitching change as Bradley built a 6-1 advantage.  With two on, Welsh ripped a two-out, three-run laser over the fence in left as Bradley took a 9-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Schaller, who faced the minimum through the first three innings, got a strikeout, lineout and groundout in the fifth to lock up the win as she improved to 5-3 on the season with the complete game victory.

Schaller had an early lead to work with after Bradley plated two runs in the top of the first.  Mead drew a one-out walk and stole second before coming home on one of Smith's two doubles in the contest.  Badgley knocked in Smith from second with a RBI single to left center as the Braves had an early 2-0 lead.

Bradley erased walks in both the first and second innings with double plays and Missouri State got its lone hit in the contest in the fourth.  Daphne Plummer walked to lead off the MSU fourth and stole second before eventually coming home on a one-out single off the bat of Alex Boze.  Schaller settled down to get a pop out and fly out to get out of the inning with a 2-1 lead.

In the opener, Bradley got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the third.  Sophomore Jordy van der Werf led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on a RBI single to center off the bat of senior Camryn Monteer as the Braves grabbed a 1-0 lead.

Missouri State answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, however.  Plummer opened the inning with a bunt single and came around to score from second on a double by Madison Hunsaker.  After a walk to Boze, Olivia Krehbiel had the big hit of the frame with a three-run homer to left center as the Bear went in front 4-1.

Singles sandwiched around a walk to start the bottom of the fourth loaded the bases for Missouri State.  A double to left center by Hunsaker plated all three base runners as the Bears grabbed a 7-1 advantage.  Missouri State loaded the bases again later in the inning for Annie Murller, who gave the Bears a 10-1 lead with a three-run double.

After giving up the Bradley run in the third, Missouri State pitcher Steffany Dickerson retired the final seven batters as she earned her 18th win of the year with the Bears claiming the opener 10-1.

Bradley and Missouri State close out the series Sunday with a single game at noon.
